From Senator Merkley: In the face of a serious public health emergency, it's completely irresponsible to scare people away from medical care. We're calling on the Trump administration to reverse its policies—ICE arresting people seeking care at hospitals and other medical facilities and targeting people enrolled in programs like Medicaid for green card denial—and promise they will not deport people who may be seeking treatment for COVID-19. KYAQ listeners! KYAQ is moving to its new studio in Newport on Sunday March 15th. We need boxes! And, we could use some folks who can lift boxes on the 15th. And we sure could use some moving funds! We need $3,000 to help with move-in costs, some much needed equipment upgrades, and all those unanticipated incidentals that go along with moving. Please go to KYAQ.org to donate to our moving fund. We've already received $300. from some loyal listeners. Match 'em! You can also send in a check to PO Box 1664, Newport 97365. Coronavirus | U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon

From Jeff Merkley:
"In light of a newly confirmed case of coronavirus in Oregon, one of the most important things elected officials can do right now is make reliable information accessible. That’s why I created a new resource page at www.merkley.senate.gov/coronavirus for Oregonians to get the information they need to stay safe and healthy. My team and I will be updating this new resource page as developments unfold."

Sonic Café... taking over the world one episode at a time… it’s a slow process but we’re making progress, so ahh, welcome, I’m your host Scott Clark and this is episode 189. This time the Sonic Café presents a music mix covering thirty years. We kick it old school with tunes from the late Rick Ocasek and the Cars, Daryl Hall and Robert Fripp with Something in 4/4 Time, Bonnie Raitt, Santana and David Bowie asking if there’s life on Mars. Also great jazz from the late, great sax man James Moody, captured in 1996 on Clint Eastwood’s After Hours: Live at Carnegie Hall with a tune called Parker’s Mood. Then later the Sonic Café features the dry wit of comedian Demetri Martin… oh and great big Sonic Café welcome to our newest sponsor. Listen for a word from Aron’s List… hire a non-violent sex offender for your next home improvement project with Aron’s List. All that and of course more this time from that little café that brings you a weekly dose of intelligent, irreverent, eclectic radio from the beautiful Oregon coast… we’re the Sonic Café.

After Republican Walkout, Cap-and-Trade Supporters Urge Oregon Dems to Stop Compromising

PECUN writes: Our Executive Director was featured in the Portland Mercury during the rally to End the Republican Walkout:
“We made a lot of sacrifices, and we actually came to the table in good faith, We’re highly encouraging the Democrats to not make any backroom deals with these people… We don’t think we need any more input from the GOP.
We’re seeing a lot more heat exhaustion of our workers, there’s a lack of access to clean water sometimes out there as well. We know that the average life expectancy for a migrant farmworker is in their late 40s, and to me that is an equity and justice issue.” #ORpol

Spotlight on music teachers
Lincoln County Oregon Music Teachers Association (OMTA) will present an afternoon benefit concert for the Suzanne Brown Student Aid Fund on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive St. in Newport. Admission is by donation.
“The spotlight concerts are the primary means of funding our scholarships,” said Rita Warton, president of the local district. “Our Student Aid Fund supplies money for tuition, books or event fees for students who otherwise would not be able to take private lessons from experienced and qualified teachers. Over the past 18 years over $20,000 has been given to many students, usually as partial help for tuition. We want everyone to know just how much their support matters. Without that help these students would be lost.”
“This concert, ‘Broadway, Movies & Fun!’ is truly an eclectic mix from Broadway, light classics and classic rock,” said Jessica Treon, co-chair of the event. “Grayson Schlosser, one of our newer and younger members, will delight the audience with two numbers. ‘Steampunk Madness’ is his own composition which will bring the audience to their feet. His other number is ‘Human Nature,’ a Michael Jackson number arranged by pianist Peter Bence.

Today’s program is about minerals: the fundamental geologic building blocks of the natural world. Geologists study minerals to understand the formation of rocks and to locate and extract resources that we use in our everyday life. Some minerals are the raw materials for manufacturing chemicals, concrete, and common objects like sheetrock. Other minerals, such as ore minerals produce valuable metals like copper, silver, and gold. Some minerals are so beautiful in their natural form that they are a delight to our eyes and we use them as jewelry and ornamentation. Some minerals like uranium and coal provide for our energy needs. We consume minerals in our food and they in turn fuel our body and build the skeletal material that give our body form and shape. It really is no wonder that mineralogy fascinates both geologists and the rock hound in us all.
