American Crafted Furniture opened in Holland, bringing together Archbold Furniture and Norwalk Furniture; two of the region's longest-standing furniture makers, under one roof. The concept is simple: 100% American-made, heirloom-quality furniture built to last generations rather than product cycles. In an era dominated by flat-pack imports, it's a reminder that Northwest Ohio still knows how to make things.

🚨 Buffalo Wild Wings is coming to Waterville.

As construction continues on the new Meijer development, plans now call for a 7,600-square-foot Buffalo Wild Wings location along South Pray Boulevard, with an anticipated opening by Memorial Day 2027.

The arrival of Meijer and Buffalo Wild Wings represents one of the most significant retail investments currently underway in Northwest Ohio.

We’ll be following this project closely.

The true measure of a leader isn’t what they build while they’re there, it’s what continues to grow after they’re gone. Few examples in Northwest Ohio illustrate that better than Walt Churchill.

This week’s Toledo Money is a little different.

We set out to learn more about Walt Churchill Jr. and the role he played in building one of Northwest Ohio’s most respected brands. What we found was something bigger.

Story after story pointed to the same theme: people mattered. Whether you were a customer walking through the doors, a supplier, or an employee building a career, Walt had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and important.

The more conversations we had, the more apparent it became that his legacy isn’t measured in stores opened or products sold. It’s measured in the thousands of lives he positively impacted along the way.

We hope you enjoy reading this story as much as we enjoyed researching it and speaking with the people who knew him best. Their stories left an impression on us, too.

Honoring the late Walt Churchill Jr. who built an employee owned company with the customer at the center of every decision.

We have noticed more $1 million-plus homes hitting the market across the NW Ohio region lately, which got us wondering: what does it actually take to comfortably afford that home?

While a bank may approve a buyer with household income in the $300,000 range, the buyers who tend to sleep well at night look a little different. Think gross household income of $450,000 to $600,000+, a few hundred thousand dollars of equity from a previous home, a sizable down payment, and plenty of cash left over after closing.

With today’s interest rates, taxes and insurance a $1 million home can easily carry an $8,000+ monthly housing payment.

A simple rule of thumb: many financially conservative buyers try to keep their home value at roughly 3x their annual gross household income. Using that math, a $1 million home points to a household earning around $400,000 per year. The takeaway? The purchase price gets the attention. The income, equity, and cash reserves behind the purchase are what make it comfortable.

Everyone talks about attracting young professionals and retaining families in Northwest Ohio.

But here’s a question we rarely ask:

Where are they supposed to spend their weekends?

Not just dinner. Not just a quick coffee.

Where are the places that encourage people to stay for three or four hours? Places where parents can bring their kids, meet friends, walk around, support local businesses, and make an evening out of it.

We celebrate attendance numbers at events across the region, and that’s important. But attendance alone doesn’t tell us whether we’re creating experiences that families and working professionals actually want to return to week after week.

Where can we offer something more than a transaction, but instead an experience?

Where people can eat, socialize, explore, relax, and spend an entire evening there.

The regions that win over the next 20 years won’t simply be the ones with the most jobs. They’ll be the ones that give people a reason to build their lives there after work is over.

What place in Northwest Ohio do you think does this best?

The Port of Toledo generates more than $900 million in annual economic activity.

Toledo Express Airport contributes another $581 million.

Combined, that’s roughly $1.5 billion flowing through assets most residents rarely think about.

So why don’t more people know what the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority actually does?

We went looking for answers.
