From February 18th, 1999, here's the WLIO 11PM News Journal... kind of!

As you all know, I inherited a massive archive of Lima media history from my father, local radio personality and live event promoter 'Jim (Diesel) Edwards'. Audio tapes, Reel-To-Reels, CDs, all kinds of stuff. Recently in a box of video tapes, I found a tape that said, "Final Ross ER". I popped it in and up came an episode of a show titled, 'Veronica's Closet', with Kirstie Alley and John Ritter. Then, the last episode of ER to feature "Dr. Ross" played by that one guy named George Clooney (whatever happened to him). Then after that was an 'almost' complete newscast from that night on WLIO. It cuts off midway through the second half of Vince Koza's sportscast for the evening, but it's still a cool find nonetheless.

That said, enjoy this throwback to the 11pm News on WLIO on Thursday February 18th, 1999. I even kept the original commercials intact, so it is 'as it aired' that night. Thanks for watching and feel free to pass it on!

From everyone at THE JT SHOW, we would like to send a special "get well soon" to SPARK SIMON who recently faced some health challenges. From the days of WAXY and the birth of 92 ZOO/WZOQ in 1986, through the 90's when he helped put 107.5 THE BIG BUCK in the public conscience, then back to 92 ZOO in the mid 90's and helping to co-launch the cult-favorite 93X with 'Big Jim Edwards' (and so much more), Spark Simon became a mainstay in the Lima radio landscape. If Spark was a part of, or helping to lead your station, you knew the station would succeed. It wasn't a matter of 'if', but by how much!

His contributions to the culture of Allen and the surrounding counties isn't able to be fully stated. There's a good chance that if you listened to any radio station in Lima over the last 40 years, you probably heard him, or heard a little bit of his influence. If there was a Mount Rushmore for Lima radio broadcast voices and figures of importance, Spark would no doubt be in the running.

In the early 90's, a new station hit the air in Lima called, "WBUK-107.5 The Big Buck". They played what was referred to as 'oldies', music from the 50's and 60's. Everything from the birth of Rock 'N Roll, to the days of Woodstock, 'The Big Buck' was the station Lima tuned to when they wanted a little Bill Haley and Beatles with their Motown (or vice versa). One of the highlights of the station came after the station had been on the air for a little while, and it was their morning show. Featuring Lima Radio veteran Spark Simon, along with a 'then' new voice for sports on the airwaves named Todd Walker, and Betsy Winget delivering the news, the morning show on The Buck became the centerpiece of what the listeners were able to be a part of every Monday through Friday from 6am to 10am.

One of the highlights of the morning show was the 'Buckhead of the Day', brought to you by Cappie's. On July 18th, 1994, they picked up the phone and did something they didn't normally do. They made a competing disc jockey from another radio station, the man known as 'Big Jim Edwards', the 'Buckhead of the Day'!

107.5 The Big Buck

Before he became a pillar in the legacy of Lima's former X107.5, Eric Michaels was spinning up the classic hits. Hitting the airwaves to take over for the fledgling 'Majic 104', 'WUZZ 104' became Lima's go-to for Top-40 Classic Rock and the hits of the day from the 1970's and early 80's. The station featured various people in the morning like Cousin Buzz, 'The Saint', Big Buddha, then Rino in the midday for your lunchtime, then Eric Michaels took the driver seat for your classic cruise home in the afternoon. As my father so cleverly put it, "WUZZ 104 was the station I grew up listening to". If that's the case, then in my opinion that radio station truly did play, "The best classic hits there ever W-U-Z-Z"!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the workers, families, and everyone affected by what went on at the Meijer in Lima earlier today. Thank you to those who helped get everyone to safety, and a special thank you as well to the local law enforcement and first responders for their assistance.
