“When you're in a position of power, I think it's important to have as much empathy as you possibly can. And as much understanding as you possibly can. And as much mutual respect for other people as you possibly can. You could be a leader by scaring people, but that's not really the way to actually have a functioning work environment… I think something that being in a leadership position like this has taught me over the past year is, working towards diversity is an effort. You know, it's not just like you can put in your mission statement that you're going to strive towards diversity. You actually need to make it intentional,” Cochran said.

I have really enjoyed browsing your page today, especially as a student writer myself, I love seeing what other universities’ student-run news organizations are doing in their own community! I can tell how passionate you all are about making sure that students have an outlet and a voice on their college campus (and in their community in general) to discuss relevant topics and news, and this actually reminds me so much of a film that I saw at a recent film festival titled The Revolution Generation: How Millennials Can Save America and the World. Revolution Generation dives into today’s social issues, history’s biggest past issues, and relevant events that we are still feeling the effects of today generation to generation. The film discusses many important topics from climate change, to gender inequality, to current activism movements, to politics. My favorite takeaway from the film was a feeling of empowerment. The film has a strong message that any individual, especially in today’s younger generations, has the power to change any current systems or institutions that they’re passionate about and make the world a better place. Plenty of young activists are shown in the film like Shailene Woodley and Greta Thunberg, and even more familiar faces are included like Corbin Bleu and narrator Michelle Rodriguez. The film is enlightening, entertaining, and inspiring, and I believe it will encourage important conversations nationwide about youth empowerment and leadership. Revolution Generation comes out on Earth Day this Friday, and there is actually a premiere in your area at the Laemmle Monica Film Center that day. I’d highly recommend any young people with an interest in social issues and ways to take action to check it out. Here is a link with more information about your local premiere if you’re interested in learning more about it! https://www.facebook.com/events/1024398928284321/?active_tab=about

El Camino College The Union Editor-in-Chief Molly Cochran has written a story for Warrior Life about the loss of Union and Warrior Life member Juan Miranda. "Juan was the most present person on the staff. Every time I needed an editor or had a question, he responded in minutes except for the occasional times we were both unavailable, and that was during Dodger’s games." https://eccunion.com/warrior-life/2021/06/01/following-in-his-footsteps/
Another installment of El Camino College The Union's "Editor Spotlight" highlights Social Media Editor Walter Jay Jr. “'As I look back at my time here at The Union I'm thankful that I was able to be a part of something that I'm truly passionate about. I have to give a huge shout out to professor Kate McLaughlin. She sparked my journalistic curiosity and she always made me feel like I could accomplish and do anything I wanted to do. And to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't have even joined The Union, or done any of the things that I've done while I've been here, if it wasn't for her. So I give all of the credit to her… I feel like my time [here] has been really special and really unique, and it's something that I'm really, really thankful for,' Jay said."
