Margaret hadn’t unpacked.

Instead, she reached into the side pocket of her suitcase and pulled out a small, wrapped parcel. It was no bigger than a jewelry box, the paper yellowed with age, tied tightly with a ribbon that looked like it had been knotted decades ago. Her fingers traced its edges, familiar and worn smooth by time. She didn’t open it—yet. But she pressed it gently to her chest.

They thought she was just an old woman. A burden. A faded photograph in their busy lives. But they didn’t know everything.

When my husband left for a month-long business trip to New York, I never imagined that a simple cactus would unravel everything I thought I knew about my life.

It all started on a quiet Saturday morning. The soft glow of spring sunlight spilled through our apartment windows, warming the hardwood floors and bathing everything in a peaceful golden hue. I was tidying up, trying to fill the silence left behind by John’s absence, when I noticed his favorite potted cactus perched precariously on the windowsill. I decided to move it to a safer spot—just a small gesture to care for something he loved while he was away.

But as I lifted the pot, it slipped from my hands and crashed to the floor, shattering on impact.

My best friend found a boyfriend. I was so happy for her, and he seemed like a good man. But there was one small issue… I had NEVER met him! Not once. Not even a photo. I've been flight attendant for years, but I've never seen something like THIS!
So, the plane takes off, it's all's good. As I'm heading back to my seat, I pass the bathroom and hear this weird squeaky noise. Instantly, I'm like, "Did someone lose their cat mid-flight?"
I knock - nothing. Panicking a little, I open the door and froze. There was A LITTLE BOY, curling up on the floor, crying his eyes out. I crouch down, saying, "Hey, buddy! I'm Leslie. What's your name?"
Crying, he mumbled, "Ben."
I tried to find where he had to be. But turns out...there's no "Ben" on the passenger list. Not a single one.
My brain is spinning. "Ben, where are your parents? Are you lost?"
He doesn't answer, just clutches THIS RATTY LITTLE PAPER BAG even more.
Trying to keep it together, I ask, "Alright, Ben. Focus. What's in the bag?" 🔽
