What were you doing when this was happening?

Ten years ago today, a line of severe thunderstorms called a derecho made its way across Lake Michigan. This ominous shelf cloud was the leading edge of the storm event that included 100mph+ straight-line winds, causing extensive damage and destruction to the Grand Traverse area.

Shortly after this picture was taken, many first responders were called to a multitude of incidents, and Emergency Management activated the Emergency Operations Center. The center remained active for 34 days of response and recovery from the severe storm. Some residents took years to recover, and the scars to the landscape will be visible for many years to come.

9 Michigan counties were affected with damages of approx. $82 million, $15 million alone in Grand Traverse County.

Grand Traverse County Emergency Management works daily with all county, municipal, and township Public Safety officials to plan and prepare for one of those "I never thought it would happen here" days. We don't want it to happen, but we know that "it" could, so we practice and prepare.
