I applaud the Michigan Legislature which favored bills to ban dismemberment abortions (D&E), the most common late-term abortion procedure (over 1,700 in Michigan per year). As one who is and has been staunchly pro-life, I am appalled by the thought of such callous disregard for innocent life. The fact that our consciences have been sufficiently anesthetized to accept this as “normal” makes me shudder. If such a procedure were done to animals, there would surely be public outrage. For the sake of respecting human dignity and the rights of the most fragile and vulnerable humans – those in the womb with beating hearts – I urge Governor Whitmer to do the right thing: Sign the dismemberment abortion ban legislation into law.

TODAY AT NOON: When Dr. Monica Miller was sentenced to 33 days in the Oakland County Jail last summer for her part in the Red Rose Rescue effort, it wasn't her first time going to jail for defending the unborn. This week on The Cross Walk, Dr. Miller shares some of her wide range of experiences in the pro-life movement (including recovering the remains of aborted children from dumpsters and providing them with proper burials), discusses the movie Unplanned, and invites listeners to join in a nationwide prayer vigil for the unborn coming up this weekend (with sites in Traverse City and Petoskey

All throughout the world, Christians are gathering together to celebrate the beginning of our Lenten journey which we call Ash Wednesday. We have ashes placed on our foreheads and we begin this time of preparation … like watching the “coming attractions” at the movies. Holy Week and Easter is coming – the passion, death and resurrection of Christ our Savior! We prepare for it – so we don’t miss it! We have a time-honored formula that has been used for centuries by Christians – prayer, fasting and almsgiving – or works of charity.

Our day would not be complete without considering very briefly the two statements that can be said with regard to the imposition of Ashes – “Remember you are dust and unto dust you will return” – or “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” Our mortality and the meaning of our lives are at stake here.

Still, our aim should not be to be afraid of the ashes – but to welcome them as we would acknowledge our failings and shortcomings, knowing that Christ is accompanying us on this journey every step of the way – pointing out the path – and helping us become truer to ourselves. The Sacrament of Penance is available and utilized to receive the abundance of grace we need during these confusing moments for all of us.

That’s Good News indeed!

May we turn away from all that is sinful and believe – truly believe in the Gospel – the good news that promises us life eternal! Let’s walk together as one family.

Some good tips, and, of course, memento mori!

#AshWednesday Fasting Tips:

1. Drink LOTS of water (*really* helps).
2. In your hunger, pray for those who go without.
3. Go to bed early the night before and/or the day of.
4. Don't complain or exaggerate the difficulty.
5. Offer up your suffering for someone you love

Sharing early so you can take advantage of Tip #3! May you all have a blessed Lent.

Day 2 of our Novena for Bishop Baraga's canonization and for Evangelization... That everyone would have a personal relationship with Christ.

Opening Prayer
O God, I adore you with all my heart. I
thank you for the life and holiness of your
servant, Bishop Baraga. In imitation of your
Son he poured himself out in your service,
bringing your merciful love and saving
Gospel to the peoples of the Great Lakes.
Through his union with you in powerful
intercession, please grant the favor I beseech
you, (name intention) so that your glory
may be manifested and we shall praise you
forever, through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

SECOND DAY
Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find; knock and the door
will be opened to you. For everyone who
asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be
opened. Which one of you would hand his
son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread,
or a snake when he asks for a fish? If you
then, who are wicked, know how to give
good gifts to your children, how much more
will your heavenly Father give good things
to those who ask him.” Matthew 7:7-11

“Truly, God desires much that we be happy,
he prizes highly our happiness. He sacrifices
his Son to make our souls happy! My
children, may you well understand this, so
that you too may prize your happiness as
God himself prizes it.” -Bishop Frederic
Baraga

Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory be…
Jesus, I trust in you. For love of you I forgive
everyone who has ever harmed me.
Bishop Baraga, please pray for my intention.

Closing Prayer
Lord, I thank you for all the graces received
through the intercession of Bishop Baraga
by this novena. You are the Almighty Lord,
who knows all things and who ‘does
whatever he wills, in heaven, on earth, in the
seas’ (Ps 135:6). I trust in your care, ever
solicitous and full of loving-kindness, and so
I commend my petition and myself to you,
body, soul, and spirit, without reserve and
with boundless confidence, to do with as you
will. Amen.

As we celebrate this Christmas, let’s take time to reflect on the fact that we didn’t have to go looking for God … he found a way to come looking for us in a most unexpected and surprising way … in the smile of a helpless infant that invites us to cradle and nurture and care for each other as we care for the one whom God sent to us!

May this Christmas – in all of its wonder and majesty – be a moment in which we experience the love of the radiant light and the tender embrace of peace that Jesus brings into our lives.

Merry Christmas from me and my family!

TODAY AT NOON: Earlier this month, voters in Michigan approved Proposal 1, legalizing the recreational use of marijuana. We invited our next door neighbor, Chip Cieslinski of Catholic Human Services, over to sort through what this means for us as parents, citizens, and Catholics. We also discuss some of the preventative and treatment programs provided by Catholic Human Services to address substance abuse in our Diocese.

Great interview today on The Cross Walk by Deacon Kevin Endres! He was joined by Brother Casey Cole, OFM from Breaking In The Habit. Powerful words about using Social Media for ministry. Br. Cole (will be ordained a Priest next June) was on to promote his new book Called: What Happens After Saying Yes to God. The closing discussion of the interview focused on Social Media. Great correlation (paraphrasing) about Jesus going where the sinners and tax collectors were to preach, If you want to reach people with the Word of God you have to go where the people are hanging out! Social Media! Thanks Baraga Radio Network for hosting and producing this great weekly show. Catch the encore presentation this Friday!
Just listened to conversation with Bob Bowersox. What a great story on his faith. Is there a way I can listen to it again. I missed the beginning of it. Thanks!
