Area Auto Racing News

Area Auto Racing News Area Auto Racing News The Area Auto Racing News began publication in the summer of 1963 as a four page tabloid. For over 40 years the paper has set the standard as a leader in weekly racing publications.

Area Auto was the first with weekly front page color photos, a tradition that carries on today some 20 years later. The paper was established by founder Leonard J. Sammons Jr. A true race fan at heart, he wanted to close a void in coverage for the local short track racers. From his dreams developed the first ever regional racing paper in the country. Today, the Area Auto Racing News continues to pride itself on its coverage of the short track racer in the northeast. Well over 100 speedways from Ohio east and Virginia north are found with both written race results and photo coverage. National news is not forgotten. Nationally known journalists cover up to the minute Sprint Cup news weekly, backed up by an award winning photo staff. All other major series of NASCAR are covered as well along with IndyCar, Indy Racing League, World of Outlaws, All Stars, Stars, USAC, NHRA, DIRT and other national traveling series. What makes the Area Auto Racing News even more special is views shared from well over 20 columnists who speak their mind and bring the readers closer to the action. The columnists are respected in the industry for their views, insights and opinions. Combine the local and national news, the columns and over 150 photos and you have Area Auto Racing News. Second generation publisher/editor Lenny H. Sammons organizes the weekly efforts that average nearly 80 pages a week. Special editions focus on specific topics or big events. The specials increase circulation and drive page numbers as high as 128. Our Readership is so eager to receive the paper that the earliest deadline of any racing paper in the country is followed. The paper is 95% completed on Monday night. By 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning the presses are running and by 6 p.m. all copies have been delivered by carrier to one of New Jersey's major post office sectional centers - on their way to the readers. So whether it be the driver, mechanic, team owner, fan, promoter, press member or the corporate sponsor AARN reaches them all.

ON TOP OF HIS GAME IN NORTHEAST DIRT MODIFIED RACING is Stewart Friesen! He’s shown here (Photo by Steve Sabo/SDS) in victory lane after his triumph at Delaware’s Georgetown Speedway in “The Gobbler” on November 21 with proud son Parker there for the celebration. It was Friesen’s 27th win on the circuit this year, as he became the Northeast’s Winningest Driver overall and in the Dirt Modified category as documented in the pages of Area Auto Racing News. Friesen kept up a busy schedule, while also racing full-time with the HFR Halmar-Friesen team on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series!

SNOWBALL DERBY, 2020: The finish of the Super Late Model Snowball Derby 300 (top) came down to a slugfest between Derek Thorn (outside) and Ty Majeski (inside) with smoke flying. Wisconsin’s Majeski (lower left) won his first career Snowball Derby after years of trying. In the Late Model Snowflake 100 Saturday, Massachusetts’ Jake Johnson was awarded the win after a tangle among the race leaders took out Bubba Pollard and led to the disqualification of Stephen Nasse, elevating the 17 year old Johnson to a surprise victory. He had started 31st in the field.

Indoor Racing in Allentown is still in the works!

Indoor Racing in Allentown is still in the works!

A message to all Indoor Series competitors and fans.

It was announced this week in Area Auto Racing News that our event on January 8 and 9 at the PPL Center in Allentown will not be open to fans due to new gathering limits in the State of Pennsylvania.

However, we haven't given up on the event yet! We are still in active discussions with the arena to host the event without fans. It would competitors only with the event streamed via PPV.

As a matter of fact we are looking at doing it twice, not one weekend, but two weekends of racing.

There are a lot of things that need to be figured out but things are moving quickly and we hope to make a decision and announcement by this time next week.

Hold in there with us, we are trying to make this happen!

In the interim how about a deal on Indoor Series merchandise from past events??? $20 Mystery Boxes. You pick the size, we fill the box with gear. Hoodies, T-Shirts, Programs.

LARSON JUST KEEPS ON WINNING: There’s no driver in the country who has done what Kyle Larson has done in 2020. In an amazing streak of dirt track mastery that has run all spring, summer and fall, Larson has won Winged Sprint Car features, and some Midget races across the nation, coast to coast. Whether in Central Pennsylvania, Knoxville, IA, the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, OK, even at Port Royal Speedway one night in a Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model, Larson has been unbeatable. This past week at the Copper Classic in Arizona, Larson twice more, in ASCS 360 Sprint Cars, to run his season total to 45 wins. (Photo - Bob Yurko)

Motorsports Racecar & Trade Show

As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on indoor gatherings in place in the State of Pennsylvania, the Pioneer Pole Buildings Motorsports Racecar and Trade Show fueled by Sunoco Race Fuels has been postponed until 2022.

The decision to postpone the event, which was to be held on January 22, 23 & 24 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, was made over the Thanksgiving holiday by event promoter Len Sammons.

“Postponing the event which has been held annually for over 30 years was one of the toughest decisions I have had to make,” stated Len Sammons.

THE CHECKERED FLAG WAVED FOR THE NORTHEAST OUTDOOR SEASON last Saturday when The Gobbler took place before an enthusiastic crowd at Delaware’s Georgetown Speedway! The Modified feature went to Stewart Friesen (top, Photo by Alan Reed), who celebrated after a dominating run in which he led by as much as three-quarters of a lap. It was his 27th win of the year, tops in the Northeast dirt Modifieds; Dueling for position behind Friesen (above, Reed) are Jimmy Zacharias (71), Billy Pauch Jr. (96), Jordan Watson (far outside) and Dom Buffalino, the new driver of Glenn Hyneman’s No. 126!

TAKING A WILD RIDE DURING 410 SPRINT CAR TIME TRIALS at PA’s BAPS Motor Speedway on Saturday afternoon was JR Berry (74). Berry sailed his machine off into the corner at speed and rolled it over sending it skyward, ultimately landing on top of the catch fencing that separates the racing surface from the pit area. Berry was helped down from the car, then walked away uninjured in the incident, but his day was over. (Photo by Troy Junkins)

IN AN INCREDIBLE, WINNING FINISH at NJ’s Bridgeport Speedway, young Alex Yankowski flipped across the line! Yankowski had taken the checkered the lap before while in first place, but didn’t realize the race was over. Keeping up his speed, he caught the third turn fence, stayed on the gas on the homestretch, tagged the fence again and took this violent flip. At the same time, the flaggers were waving the checkered at the other drivers! Yankowski was unhurt, and celebrated to the cheers of the huge crowd! (Photo by David Gehman)

Modified driver Danny Hieber (11) flew through the air (bottom, Poppa Pepper’s photo) after post-checkered flag tangle. Note huge soft clay chunk wedged between back of seat and back of roll cage. Less than 1 week till the season finale. Weather is looking beautiful and the racing will be insane!!! What ever type of race cars you like, we have them all, going to be a great weekend of high banked 5 wide action at the Kingdom of Speed!

Friday's events remain as originially planned. This will feature the URC Sprint Cars, 602 Sportsman Underdog 20 and Street Stocks.

Saturday, we have spoke with all of the qualified drivers of the Danny Serrano 100. The consensus was let's have an action packed day of Sprint Cars and Modifieds! The Danny Serrano 100 Memorial will take place Saturday along with a full program of URC Sprint Car action and the Precision Hydraulic and Oil 602 Sportsman 30 lap event + 4 & 8 cylinders combined. The action will begin at 3:00 pm!

Then on Sunday, we bumped up the Modified program to 50 laps paying a whopping $7000 to win (w/gamblers). Sunday will consist of a full program of modified qualifying and the 50 lap feature along with the 602 sportsman, Street Stocks, and twin SpeedSTR features. We will also take the green at 3:00 pm Sunday.

This is going to be a HUGE final weekend at the "Kingdom of Speed" Bridgeport Motorsports Park!

SCHEDULE SET FOR 2021 WINTER NATIONALS January 28th , 29th and 30th the stars of the UMP DIRTCAR Mod division will pull into town at the North Florida Speedway in Lake City , Florida for their annual event. Racing will be Thursday , Friday and Saturday and because of the Super Bowl being held in Tampa we will not be racing on Sunday the 31st and will not run Super Late Models this year. Dick and son Nick Stark will soon be announcing plans on the February 4th , 5th , 6th and 7th GRIT Series racing event for the 602 Crate Sportsman Mods at North Florida Speedway and Dick will be in attendance at the trade show in Syracuse this week with details . I will tell you this much. GRIT has VERY exciting plans for 2020 and the 2021 Winter Nationals at NFS and are already planning on a couple of other Northeast divisions coming down to be an exciting part of this event. They will be racing Thursday , Friday and Saturday night with Sunday as a make up rain date if necessary. If they don't use the rain date a celebration is in the works for all competitors on Sunday with food and entertainment. Their plans as well as supporting divisions for UMP DIRTCAR weekend will be announced shortly. So there you go the dates have been set and the wheels are turning.
