Area Auto Racing News Area Auto Racing News
The Area Auto Racing News began publication in the summer of 1963 as a four page tabloid. For over 40 years the paper has set the standard as a leader in weekly racing publications. Area Auto was the first with weekly front page color photos, a tradition that carries on today some 20 years later. The paper was established by founder Leonard J. Sammons Jr. A true race fan at heart, he wanted to close a void in coverage for the local short track racers. From his dreams developed the first ever regional racing paper in the country. Today, the Area Auto Racing News continues to pride itself on its coverage of the short track racer in the northeast. Well over 100 speedways from Ohio east and Virginia north are found with both written race results and photo coverage. National news is not forgotten. Nationally known journalists cover up to the minute Sprint Cup news weekly, backed up by an award winning photo staff. All other major series of NASCAR are covered as well along with IndyCar, Indy Racing League, World of Outlaws, All Stars, Stars, USAC, NHRA, DIRT and other national traveling series. What makes the Area Auto Racing News even more special is views shared from well over 20 columnists who speak their mind and bring the readers closer to the action. The columnists are respected in the industry for their views, insights and opinions. Combine the local and national news, the columns and over 150 photos and you have Area Auto Racing News. Second generation publisher/editor Lenny H. Sammons organizes the weekly efforts that average nearly 80 pages a week. Special editions focus on specific topics or big events. The specials increase circulation and drive page numbers as high as 128. Our Readership is so eager to receive the paper that the earliest deadline of any racing paper in the country is followed. The paper is 95% completed on Monday night. By 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning the presses are running and by 6 p.m. all copies have been delivered by carrier to one of New Jersey's major post office sectional centers - on their way to the readers. So whether it be the driver, mechanic, team owner, fan, promoter, press member or the corporate sponsor AARN reaches them all.

LOOKING TOWARD HIS FUTURE, as a Modified driver and in track management, is Brett Hearn (above, Photo by AlexandHelen Bruce). A special story on pages 18 and 19, plus color pictures on page 35, in this week’s edition details Hearn’s incredible career as he prepares to enter the Northeast Dirt Modified Museum and Hall of Fame this summer. While Hearn transitions to a reduced schedule at the wheel of a race car, he will become the full time General Manager of N.Y.’s Orange County Fair Speedway. But as the COVID-19 shutdown continues, he joins others in hoping that competition returns soon.

BAPS Motor Speedway (top, Photo by Garry Ferguson) had a successful conclusion to its 2019 season, and there was great anticipation at the York Haven, PA track for 2020 until the COVID-19 shutdown. Scott Gobrecht has a vested interest in racing resuming, as he is co-owner of BAPS and Lincoln Speedway, two Sprint Car teams and directs the Central PA Legend Car Series; With racing sidelined, the regional dealers of Hoosier Racing Tire (left, Photo by Bob Yurko) and American Racer Tires (above, Photo by Stephen Sabo) tires have large inventories and no customers.

THE WAIT CONTINUES FOR THE LOYAL FANS (top, Photo by Bob Yurko) at Pa.’s Williams Grove Speedway, along with those at local and national series tracks around the country during the Coronavirus shutdown that enters its fourth week. Some speedway operators have discussed having races without spectators; Once our sport resumes, those spectators will be watching events with many varied divisions. That includes the 600cc Micro-Sprints (above, Yurko Photo), shown here while charging off the corner at Kutztown, Pa.’s Action Track USA!

LOOKING INTO HIS RACING FUTURE WITH ENTHUSIASM is Doug Rose, the new owner and promoter of New Jersey’s redesigned 4/10-mile Bridgeport Speedway! He’s shown here at Bridgeport last Saturday, when race cars were scheduled to be on the clay oval for the first time for practice. However, the shutdown of large gatherings in New Jersey due to COVID-19 did not permit it. But when government officials give the word, Rose and his staff are ready to race! COVID-19 Update from Selinsgrove Speedway.

SELINSGROVE SPEEDWAY MARCH 21 SEASON OPENER POSTPONED BY COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The Saturday, March 21, season opener at Selinsgrove Speedway has been postponed in accordance with Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s recommendations on the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The modifieds were scheduled to make their first appearance at the track since 2013 this Saturday. The race will be rescheduled in March 2021.

Speedway officials will continue to monitor the pandemic situation and will make a decision next week on the Sunday, March 29, program featuring 410 sprint cars and super late models.

“While we were looking forward to the return of the modifieds this Saturday the responsible action to take at this time is to follow the state and federal guidelines on the Coronavirus pandemic,” said speedway general manager Steve Inch. “We also took into consideration many of the modified teams and fans would be traveling from New Jersey and New York where the virus has hit hardest. Everyone’s safety and well-being are the first priority.”

Modified teams that pre-registered for the race will have their checks mailed back to them.

Racing will be Thursday , Friday and Saturday and because of the Super Bowl being held in Tampa we will not be racing on Sunday the 31st and will not run Super Late Models this year. Dick and son Nick Stark will soon be announcing plans on the February 4th , 5th , 6th and 7th GRIT Series racing event for the 602 Crate Sportsman Mods at North Florida Speedway and Dick will be in attendance at the trade show in Syracuse this week with details . I will tell you this much. GRIT has VERY exciting plans for 2020 and the 2021 Winter Nationals at NFS and are already planning on a couple of other Northeast divisions coming down to be an exciting part of this event. They will be racing Thursday , Friday and Saturday night with Sunday as a make up rain date if necessary. If they don't use the rain date a celebration is in the works for all competitors on Sunday with food and entertainment. Their plans as well as supporting divisions for UMP DIRTCAR weekend will be announced shortly. So there you go the dates have been set and the wheels are turning.
Sharing my poem NASCAR Race NASCAR drivers are all lined up And ready to race It's important to win And be in the Chase "Gentlemen start your engines" When they hear, they start Stepping hard on the pedal Wonna show what they've got They maneuver, pray for luck And go very fast No one wants to lose And finish last They do their best To stay in the race To beat Kevin Harvick Or Elliott, Chase Week after week They battle the field But the end result Benefits will yield The season ends with A celebration and cash Proclaiming the Championship During the NASCAR bash

This is in response to Chuck Bollingers November 5 article on building interest with the young people in auto racing. I have found there is a huge interest for young people in racing, I found the most newspapers, Press releases etc. do not include the young racers. Locally we have the Young Guns sprint series who does wonderful things with our young people. There is a huge talent in those divisions but I never see a mention of them in an article in our valley. Maybe it isn’t the interest in racing I think the kids are yelling were interested! but no one is answering them back.
