ARMED PAROLEE ENGAGES TROY POLICE IN GUNFIGHT ON FERRY STREET; OFFICERS UNHARMED
TROY, N.Y. — A violent confrontation erupted Saturday night in Troy after police officers responding to a domestic-violence 911 call were fired upon by an armed parolee, prompting officers to return fire. The gunman was critically injured in the exchange, while two officers were evaluated at a hospital and found to be uninjured.
The incident began shortly before 10 p.m. when Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety dispatchers received a call from a woman on Ferry Street reporting that her ex-partner had confronted her inside her residence, held a handgun to her head, and then fled on foot. The woman kept him in sight from a distance and relayed his movements to dispatchers as he headed eastbound toward 6th Avenue.
Troy Police patrol officers arrived within moments and located the suspect walking along Ferry Street. As the first two officers stepped out of their vehicles to initiate contact, the man abruptly turned and fired multiple rounds at them without warning. The officers returned fire while attempting to take cover. The female victim fled westbound on foot and was not physically harmed.
The suspect then fled through the parking area of City Station South Suites, where he continued running before collapsing to the ground. He dropped both his handgun and illegal narcotics. Additional responding officers moved in, secured the weapon, and began providing emergency medical aid until Troy Fire Department personnel arrived and took over care. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Both officers involved in the initial gunfire exchange were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and were found to be uninjured. Police officials described the outcome as “nothing short of a miracle” given the gunfire directed at them.
Specialty units from the Troy Police Department, along with New York State Police patrols, investigators, and forensic multimedia specialists, responded to assist with the investigation. Officials also credited Troy Fire Department members, emergency medical staff, and county dispatchers for their coordinated response.
Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Michael Rodriguez of Troy, a parolee currently supervised by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Rodriguez is on parole stemming from a 2019 Troy case in which he originally faced charges including attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon before pleading guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon.
Prosecutors from the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and will handle the charges related to Saturday night’s shooting.
“An individual purposefully firing bullets at arriving, uniformed police officers does not represent what the Troy community is and will continue to be,” Troy Police said in a statement. “We are eternally grateful the responding officers are able to return to their families tonight.”
Mayor Carmella R. Mantello praised the officers’ actions, stating,
“Tonight’s incident is a stark reminder that at any moment, even a seemingly routine call can escalate into a critical and dangerous situation. I am deeply relieved that our officers and the community are unharmed.”
Chief of Police Daniel P. DeWolf emphasized the emotional impact on the officers involved.
“While the initial response has concluded, the trauma endured by the involved officers remains. We are committed to supporting our members with all available resources as they navigate the days ahead. I remain immensely proud of their commitment to serve our Troy community.”
Rodriguez remains in police custody at the hospital as the investigation continues.
