This is an example of how dodging and burning can create a dramatic difference in your images. In my most recent video, The Artful Dodger, I discuss first how to analyze your image and then how these simple yet powerful Photoshop tools can be more effectively utilized. Through the 30 minute presentation I show how this can be used on a variety of subjects. It is first being offered through Equine Photographers Network, but is NOT just about horses! This is an on demand video followed by two zoom session where students can send me their images for a demonstration of utilizing the principles I share. Equine Photographers Network :: The Artful Dodger

I started by career shooting film and enjoyed black and white, and the darkroom process. During that time I learned the how dodging and burning can create subtle yet powerful differences in a final image and carried that experience over into my digital work. I have released a new, informative 30 minute video entitled The Artful Dodger hosted by The Equine Photographers Network . I explain how I first analyze an image and use these simple yet powerful tools in Photoshop as a part of my post production process. Lest we forget…. A lot of brave men died for the freedoms we have today. The barb wire is from Pointe du Hoc in Normandy, and the grave sites from the Omaha beach cemetery. To those of you that have served our country… thank you.

TBTH: Being older, reflecting on experiences in life and looking back….. one thing I truly enjoyed was time spent in my black and white darkroom… Truthfully, I those early experiences fueled my passion and desire to become a professional photographer in the early 70’s. I loved the escape of getting lost in the process of developing film and creating prints trying to tell the story of what I felt and saw through my lens on a particular moment….I never tired of seeing an image, as if propelled by some visual magic, slowly appear in the developing solution tray, the darkroom light calming with its red illumination. I think I spent thousands of joyful hours in a darkroom loosing track of time and being in the moment. I still have my film developing tanks, safe light and timer... Just can't bear to part with them… The passion is still there thankfully. I have been fortunate indeed.

I have been working hard to finalize all the details for my Mongolian Photographic Tour this year, July 30th through August 14th. This tour is a fascinating journey through an ancient culture homeland. Having always been on my bucket list, last year I went to get a feeling for what this trip would offer and neither I nor the people with me were disappointed! This tour is a fascinating journey through an ancient culture. To find out all the details, please visit my website: http://www.treesmedia.com/mongolia-2020

This is the second bridge crossed on the first day of the Great American horse drive. By this time the horses are tired, and those that have made the trip before know they are close to the end of the trail, as their night pasture is not far ahead. Always enjoy seeing how they come together to cross this bridge. The entire week is quite an experience. Still room for signups: http://events.equinephotographers.net/col20/

TBT This shot is of a great mare named NV NATASHAM. I did a lot of sessions with her, but this was one of my favorites. She was also owned by an equally great lady, Pidge Wood. The mares jet black color lent itself well for the red halter. Also, this was shot on slide film!

The Sombrero crew is one of the best I have worked with. More than once I will have them ride hard through water, getting soaked in the process. Not once in all of the years I have had the privilege to lead this workshop, have I ever had a complaint. However, I am sure they were thinking it! But it sure makes for some dramatic imagery. When I say there a lot of horses, this shot is what I mean. This is during the Great American horse drive, and participants of this portion of the workshop have special access to the herd. It’s not just the sight of the horses but also the sound: The syncopated rhythm of hooves striking the ground, and of horses calling out in a range of whinnies and knickers.. Seeing and hearing a herd this size in motion is truly sight to behold. Now, imagine photographing it.
