πΈ THIS DAY IN MUSIC β September 23
The Boss's birthday, a Beatle death hoax, and enough classic albums to fill a record store. Let's run it back. π€
π 1949 β BORN TODAY: Bruce Springsteen. "The Boss" turns another year older β born in Long Branch, New Jersey, and NJ loved him so much they made his birthday a state holiday. "Born to Run," the E Street Band, 3-hour shows. Enough said.
π° 1969 β The "PAUL IS DEAD" rumor hits print. Northern Illinois University's Northern Star runs the claim that McCartney died in a car crash years earlier and was replaced by a look-alike. A Detroit DJ picks it up β and within a month, the whole world is flipping Abbey Road clues backwards.
π 1970 β The Allman Brothers release their second album, Idlewild South. "Midnight Rider," "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" β the sound of Southern rock being born, written in a rented cabin and road-tested on 250+ shows.
π€ 1974 β John Lennon releases "Whatever Gets You thru the Night" as a single β with Elton John on piano and backing vocals. It'd become Lennon's only solo #1 in the US during his lifetime, knocking BTO off the top that November.
β 1977 β David Bowie releases "Heroes" as a single, title track of his Berlin-period album. It flopped at #24 in the UK and missed the US chart entirely β then went on to become one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
πΉ 1982 β Billy Joel releases The Nylon Curtain. "Allentown," "Pressure," "Goodnight Saigon" β Joel's most serious, cinematic record, and one of the first albums ever digitally recorded, mixed and mastered.
πΈ 1986 β Boston releases Third Stage β eight years after Don't Look Back, after a label lawsuit tried to block it. "Amanda" gave Boston their first and only #1 single, and the album hit #1 on the Billboard 200 for four weeks.
π€ 1998 β White Zombie calls it quits. Geffen announces the breakup after 13 years β "we accomplished everything we set out to do." Two days later, Rob Zombie debuts solo on Letterman with "Dragula." The rest is horror history.
Which one hits hardest for you? Drop it in the comments. π€
