Teachers shouldn’t have to spend half their time creating evidence of what they could have spent that time actually doing.

Teaching has always involved planning, assessment, record keeping, and accountability. Some paperwork is necessary. But somewhere along the way, documenting the work became almost as important as the work itself.

Teachers are expected to track, record, upload, analyze, report, document interventions, collect evidence, update systems, and prove that progress is happening.

And every additional requirement takes something incredibly valuable away from the classroom: time.

Time that could be spent planning a better lesson. Giving thoughtful feedback. Working with a student who is struggling. Creating something engaging for tomorrow. Talking to a parent. Or simply thinking about what their students actually need next.

The irony is that many of these systems were created to improve education.

But when teachers are spending hours proving they’re doing their jobs instead of being given the time to do those jobs properly, we should probably ask whether the system has lost sight of its purpose.

Accountability matters. Data can be useful. Documentation has its place.

But none of those things should become more important than the actual teaching.

The best way to improve education isn’t always to give teachers something else to do. Sometimes it’s to get out of their way and let them teach.
