If the Save Act passes in the Senate, what will be required for people who have changed their names in order to be able to vote?
*THE SAVE ACT JUST PASSED THE HOUSE and is on its way to the .
This is VERY important for anyone who has changed their legal name since birth. (ANYONE who took their spouse's last name, for example) If your name on your REAL ID, Driver's license, etc. does not match your birth certificate, this info is for YOU.
Should the Act pass in its current form without an explicit implementation delay, the SAVE Act would take effect immediately upon being signed into law by the President.
*(This is what is expected should it pass the Senate)
Because the text includes no phase-in period or transitional buffer for election , its requirements for documentary proof of citizenship and mandatory voter roll purges would take effect instantly.
What will be required for people who have changed their names since birth to be eligible to to vote in the upcoming ?
Under the SAVE Act, voters must satisfy strict in-person identity and citizenship verification requirements.
Here is what is required for voters who have changed their names:
1. In-Person Update
You can no longer update your voter registration online or by mail.
Changes/Verification must be made in person with a local election official.
Documentation Options
To or update your name under the SAVE Act, you must provide proof of citizenship and identity. Depending on the documents you hold, you must present one of the following:
Option A:
Passport with Legal Name (Easiest)
A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card displaying your current legal name.
Why: Because a passport serves as both documentary proof of and proof of identity in your current name, no secondary documents are required.
Option B:
Birth Certificate + of Name Change + Photo ID
If you do not have a passport with your current legal name, you must provide a CHAIN of documentation:
Proof of Citizenship: A CERTIFIED birth certificate or naturalization certificate (which shows your former name/maiden name).
Bridging Document(s): Official, certified legal linking your former name to your new legal name, such as:
Certified marriage certificate(s)
Official divorce decree
Court order for a legal name change
Government-Issued Photo ID: A current ID, 's license, ID, or that matches your current legal name.
Multiple Certificates May Be Needed: If you have changed your name more than once (e.g., multiple marriages), you must provide the chain of certified legal documents linking each name change from your birth certificate to your current photo ID.
Additional Costs/Time: Obtaining official certified copies of birth certificates and from state vital records offices incurs fees and processing times, so voters are to request these documents well in advance of election deadlines.
Note: Some folks don't believe SAVE will ever pass the Senate. Personally, I'm not willing to chance losing my . If you're unable to get a passport, I'd recommend gathering the documents listed in Option B now.
