Happy and happy anniversary to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which was signed into law 35 years ago this month. ♿️

Although many strides have been made since Judy Heumann’s 26 day sit-in to protest disability discrimination in 1977, there’s still much work to be done to ensure a more accessible and equitable world for ALL persons with disabilities.

At first glance, this looks like your standard accessible parking sign… but look closely:

‼️ NO MOTORCYCLE PARKING ‼️

Yep, that extra reminder is there for a reason. While it is possible to get a disability permit for a motorcycle, most bikes parked in accessible spots are actually there illegally.

Even worse? Some riders park right on the access aisles (the striped zones next to the spot that give wheelchair users space to get in and out of their vehicles).

That’s not just illegal — it’s also super inconsiderate. 🚫

Access aisles aren’t extra parking. They’re lifelines for disabled folks trying to go about their day.

This sign was spotted at Climb Tulsa! 🧗🏼‍♀️♿️

Now that I’ve finally made a page, I thought it was time for a reintroduction! Hi, my name is Sydney Alison. I’m a filmmaker, comedian, actor, and accessibility advocate in Tulsa, Oklahoma!

I have Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), a non-progressive condition that caused muscle weakness and joint stiffness at birth. I use a power chair to get around, and recently started driving an adaptive van.

I, like countless other disabled people, have experienced many shortcomings when it comes to accessibility in public spaces — from broken elevators and lamp posts in the middle of sidewalks to tiny restroom stalls and motorcycles parked in handicap spots. “But Sydney, aren’t most of those things illegal according to the ADA?” Yes! But, that doesn’t mean they don’t happen. In fact, they happen so often that I felt the need to start posting about it.
