Owls are so rewarding to find and photograph because of their mysterious nature. I had never seen a single one until a little over a month ago! Now that I'm seeking them out, I'm starting to find them! The eBird app/website is a very helpful tool, if you'd like to go find some owls, too.

So far, this is the best shot I have of an adult Great Horned Owl, from Wednesday evening. There were actually two up in that tree, but I wasn't close at all, and it was a tall tree. I had switched the camera into APS-C mode for this one, which is essentially just cropping it in camera to provide more reach, and the cost of pixels. I'll keep at it!

I'm not interested in photographing all birds, just raptors. And while it's small, the American Kestrel is in fact a raptor! This one stayed perched on the powerline long enough for me to drive up close for a decent shot this morning!

What I captured after the take-off shot. The first one isn't bad, as just the end of his right wing is a little behind the branches. But getting some really great in-flight shots of a Great Gray is now the goal!

These guys are up next in a couple months!

Back in December of 2020, I had the pleasure of watching a nature documentary in person when two rams in the Whiskey Basin in Dubois, WY were butting heads for 2 hours. I've been back every year but one (due to a snow storm) since, but have yet to see that again!

It has actually been a struggle to see many rams in the Whiskey Basin since that year. The population had already declined significantly over the years due to pneumonia that decimated the herd, which they picked up from domestic sheep. I'm hoping their numbers can recover.

I can go to the National Elk Refuge in Jackson and I'm guaranteed to see a lot of bighorns, but I haven't seen any senior rams out there, and I just don't like it as much as the Whiskey Basin. There are a ton of people out there, making it feel more like a drive-through safari, rather than the wilderness.

In the Whiskey Basin, it's typically just me, local photographer Bill Sincavage, and maybe a couple others. The landscape also has more interesting features, and more opportunities for some spectacular backdrops, if the rams are in the right spot. I plan to go back again this year and just hope for the best. I'm also planning to return to Lamoille Canyon in Nevada, which I went to only once a few years ago, but saw one of the biggest rams I've seen.

It would have been a largely unsuccessful morning pursuing bull moose a couple weeks ago had it not been for this guy bedded down right next to the road as I was on my way out! I did see a bull early in the morning (too dark for photos), which might have been this guy, as it wasn't far away, and there was a cow & calf with him as well (actually, he was pursuing the cow).

When I first exited the vehicle, all 3 of them stood up. But after a minute, the bull laid back down. The cow & calf remained standing, and the cow was looking in my direction, inching closer one step at a time, and letting out a couple grunts.

Okay, I better move back! I retreated back toward my car, which was also off to the left, but when I got back there, she was still looking in the same direction where I had been. Turns out, there was a group of deer back in the brush! That's what had her attention, not me!

Obviously the bull was quite comfortable with my presence, as he bedded back down and could be seen dozing off. This is what I want. I want them to be comfortable with my presence, and not alter their behavior.

Yes, moose can be dangerous, but I've never had any issues as long as I give them space. 25 yards is the commonly recognized minimum distance for moose. That isn't that much distance, but in my experience, it has always been plenty. The only thing that's ever happened to indicate they haven't been comfortable with my presence is that they move away from me. I've never experienced any aggression from them, thankfully!

Comparing photos and wondering if this is perhaps the same moose, from last year to this year? 🤔

Their antlers grow anew each year, so there will be some changes, but they'll often be similar. And these are pretty similar.

He also has the lump between the antlers, and some scars between the eyes. What do you think?

This remains one of my all-time favorite photos that I have ever taken, in Banff, Canada back in fall of 2017. The light is something out of a movie! I was up there fist-pumping while taking photos of this scene, no joke! 😂

I re-edited this shot, because my editing style has changed since then (and is constantly changing). But in all honesty, this photo didn't require much editing, and doesn't look a whole lot different from my 2017 edit, because Mother Nature already did all the work!

Hail fog after a gnarly storm a couple weeks back left accumulated hail on the ground! I was hopeful to find a bull moose in the fog, but no such luck!

Experiences Over Things

It’s science. It has been proven that experiences make us happier than material things. Traveling to new places, hiking to an incredible view, mountain biking through golden aspen forests... these memories we create continue to add to our happiness long after the experience actually happened. This is what I want out of life, and my goal is to inspire you to pursue the same, and increase the happiness level in your life!
