What are your plans for this Labor Day weekend?

The Labor Day weekend is often thought of as the last big weekend of Summer. A day to spend at the lake, out camping, or grilling with the family. It originated as a celebration of the hard-working American in 1882.

Labor Day marks the unofficial beginning of fall. School is starting. Football is starting. Baseball is making a final push to see who makes the playoffs. And here in Texas, if we’re lucky, the blazing hot summer temperatures began to drop ever so slightly.

Here at the ETX Bell we hope you have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. Drop us a comment to let us know how you’re planning to celebrate.

CHEROKEE COUNTY RURAL FIRE PROTECTION
WHO WILL ANSWER WHEN YOUR HOME IS ON FIRE? 🔥
Rural fire protection is NOT optional.

Between September 1, 2025 - August 31, 2026, 75.97% OF FIRE CALLS WERE IN THE COUNTY
177 county calls | 56 city calls | 233 total calls

COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SALARIES HAVE INCREASED BY 51.18% SINCE 2010, from $43,752 in 2010 to $66,144 in 2026
MEANWHILE, THE COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS HAVE RECEIVED A COMBINED TOTAL OF $305,316 PER YEAR, WITH NO INCREASE SINCE 2010.

If 9,400 rural households experienced an average increase of only $1,000 per year, the collective cost to those residents could approach $9.4 million annually

WHAT COULD REDUCED FIRE PROTECTION COST RURAL HOMEOWNERS?

• PPC CLASS 10
A property outside a recognized fire-service area - or more than five road miles from a station - generally receives the lowest ISO fire-protection classification, unless qualifying automatic aid applies.

• HIGHER INSURANCE COSTS
The Texas Department of Insurance says premiums may increase when fire protection deteriorates. The amount varies by insurer.

• FEWER COVERAGE OPTIONS
Some insurers may be less willing to offer or renew coverage, potentially affecting rural homeownership, mortgages and property sales.
An estimated 9,000-10,000 rural households may be affected.*

THE COUNTY MUST CONSIDER THE COST SHIFTED TO RURAL PROPERTY OWNERS.
Help protect the volunteer departments that protect our homes.

CONTACT YOUR COUNTY JUDGE & COMMISSIONERS
Ask them to prioritize dependable rural volunteer fire protection.
‼️The next Commissioner's Court meeting is Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 9:00AM at the Courthouse‼️

THE SUNDAY PSALM

Psalm 150:1-6 NLT

Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heaven!

Praise him for his mighty works; praise his unequaled greatness!

Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn; praise him with the lyre and harp!

Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes!

Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals.

Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord!
