"Telling our lives is important for those who come after as, for those who will see our experience as part of their own historical struggle." --Linda Hogan, CHICKASAW– How important it is for us to support one another. How important it is for us to know our culture and to share our experiences with one another. How powerful it is to be authentic. How important it is to hold no secrets. I am as sick as my secrets. Grandfather, allow me today to be willing to share with my brother and sister. Let my eyes see You in their eyes. Let me not judge them but only love them. Grandfather, help me, for I am Your humble servant.

Having done all, stand. Stop saying you wish you had done differently, stop the anger, and above all, stop acting like a donkey. Having done all, stand still and see it work, support it by keeping faith on your lips - not pitiful insecure words. When a thing is right, it is right. Stand on it and make it part of your innermost spirit. How can your consciousness work to any advantage if you keep running in circles and doubting what you had to do? All the circumstances will come into play and make final decisions, but standing for right was your part - and you did it! ~ For all these things we thank the Great Ruler and Him only! ~

Love has no part of abuse. Claims of great love are really claims of great need when there is abuse. Love doesn't abuse. It protects and comforts and gives support. Abuse is from possession of evil - the need to hurt and destroy. It is a need for a prey - a smaller prey where domination is secure. Human need is a net thrown over a thing or a person to keep them close and subdued. If escape seems possible the possessor turns to tears and persuasion as another way of dominating. But love - love is a deep sacred trust that runs through the most common acts, the shared hours, the sweetest and most trusting touch. It is the miracle of life. ~ Why does the agent seek to take away our religion? ~

Voices echo in our minds even after we are grown. They can be whispers that only the subconscious mind can hear - but it is an exacting voice that can give us courage or suggest failure. We've no idea how fenced in we are by those voices of old. The subconscious mind is a road map, a map with many mistakes, and who is to know what they are? Nothing is set forever in one direction, and we are able to read the signs and change them. Not because they may sound old-fashioned but because they are foolish and suggest that we take paths that have no destination except ruin. We can change it and we must. ~ If the Indians had tried to make the whites live like them, the whites would have resisted, and it was the same way with the Indians. ~

FORT KEOGH WAGON BRIDGE, built 1902. The bridge spanning the Yellowstone River was north of Fort Keogh, adjacent to Miles City, Montana. Previously, the nearest bridge was 70 miles downstream at Glendive! If you used a similar wagon bridge, you may remember waiting for an approaching car to finish crossing before you could enter. The thick planks would make a loud thumping sound under your vehicle.
The 740 foot bridge was destroyed by ice jams and flooding in 2011. Federal Historic American Building Survey photo, circa 1979. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

On rare occasions you may have felt a word drop into your heart that you knew meant something because it never faded and always stood as a reminder that something profound happened. You may not have understood then, but your mind has gone back to it numerous times, wondering what it meant. Years can pass between an event and the understanding of it. It may be we have to grow up to it, or our minds and spirits have to mature enough to see how it is to play out in our lives. It is little different from building a house, you can see the structure going up, but you know it can't be used until it is finished. Sometimes ideas and visions need time to firm up before we can use them. ~ The designs of Providence, in the course of events, are mysterious.... ~

ROSE BOMPARD (BIRD), circa 1911-19. The young Crow (Apsáalooke) woman wore a full-length dress decorated with elk ivories. Each elk had only two ivory teeth, vestigial tusks, so some might have been antler or bone reproductions. A single hole was made in each for attachment to the dress. (Click image to enlarge/clarify.) The several hundred ivories indicated a family of good hunters or enough wealth to acquire ivories.

Rose Bompard married Glen Bird in 1919. She died in 1978 at age 81. Richard Throssel captured the portrait on an 8x10 inch glass plate negative, either while living on the Crow Reservation in eastern Montana or in his studio at Billings if the date was after 1911. Throssel"s work was largely ignored until the 1997 publication of “Crow Indian Photographer.” Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.
