Take me back to the Permaculture Course in Uganda….
My teacher Baba James Kagwe of Naivasha Kenya taught me more than I taught our students.
Our students are school teachers in different districts in Uganda that needed to learn to grow food for their students whose parents had little to eat during the dry seasons. This course brought all these teachers from different regions into one place, to teach them how to do this with nature all around them..
Even though they paid me to come to Uganda to teach Permaculture, I ended up learning more than I taught. The humility we need to develop in regard to the genius of Indigenous cultures was present. I learned how they developed with the land to co-exist in harmony with nature as it was the most profoundly healing experience I ever had…
Sourgum or as the Ateso language calls it “Atappa” is the sweetest red grain I could eat everyday. We ate fresh squash and greens from the garden and seeded green oranges from their orchard. And the goats ate our scraps every night. We sat by the fires and sang spiritual songs as we ate. And Mango trees were everywhere. They played Eddie Konzo on repeat everyday saying Wabale Sebooo! Which means “Thank you my Brother.”

November 2021, I started hosting online permaculture courses for 1/3 the price of an average permaculture course. One of my students was from Kenya, another from California, and another from the North East of America. These people needed to learn strategies to keep their land fertile and producing. Sister Nyakio actually runs a women’s shelter in Naivasha Kenya where she teaches these women agroforestry farming techniques, helps them raise their children, keep them fed, while doing speaking engagements with my tropical Permaculture teacher Papa Kagwe James. My student Andre Torres, Now good and close friend, was looking for deeper meaning in his life the same as I was when I was taking my first permaculture course. And finally Myriesha came through with all the best intentions to learn. I needed to help them with a scholarship because they didnt’ have the funds to fund their own education out of pocket. So i asked the community to donate funds for their tuition. And the community came through, helped, and delivered. I just want to thank you all so much for your continued support in helping indigenous farmers reclaim their knowledge and their autonomy in living in harmony and abundance on their land. Thank you!
