Newman should have negotiated “$95 and I take my pancakes with me!”

While it’s obvious who we support in this battle royale, who is your money on?

There’s a moment in the growth of any small business where an entrepreneur realizes the “systems” they had in place aren’t serving them anymore…and it’s time to make some changes.

We also discuss:

* cheating at video
* the next best thing to meeting a prospect in person
* Boss Jordan vs. Employee Jordan

Pancake Boy Productions is a Traverse City, Michigan-based production house, serving up delicious video, audio and social media content. We stack up!

Building a business is hard! And, while putting in the work is vital, what’s just as important is making sure you don’t burn yourself out! Fortunately, I learned about the most intense, concentrated relaxation as Kid Jordan.

We also discuss:

* How things get in jars.
* True remote work.
* Why entrepreneurship is the only true job security.

Hint: it’s being who you are and showing that to everyone.

Maybe I should leave all this media production stuff behind and open a restaurant…

We often jump to conclusions, and upon realizing we were wrong, we’re reluctant to admit that we made a mistake. But that reluctance IS the mistake! Admitting to your mistakes shows strength…as own of my most “tough guy” characters taught me.

We also discuss:

* the intimacy of radio and what that can teach folks in any medium.
* taking your own headshot
* jumping through a wedding cake

It’s important to take big swings for the sake of the swing, not the hits! Because a “failure” where you leave it “all on the field” isn’t really a failure at all.

We also talk about:

* Heading out for a little baseball!
* How a pocketful of marbles can change your business.
* Virtual Magic and not thinking you’re right.

As an entrepreneur, it can feel downright embarrassing to do some of the things you’ve got to do to get where you want to go. Reminds me of trying to record a music video in front of my high school…

We also discuss:

* Business Advice through the Real Estate Lens
* Adult Snow Days
* Cat Open Mics

Don't get so caught up in where you want to go that you don't see where you already are.

We were so happy to have the chance to continue our pre-season series with the Traverse City Pit Spitters -- this time focused on what their fantastic staff does to get ready for another summer!

Putting together quotes, and deciding what to charge clients for your services, is one of the hardest parts of establishing a business.

At this point, I can gauge how long things are going to take me to make, but figuring out what to charge for it...that’s another story. Because it's not just about time...it's about my expertise and about knowing that I can create something that will provide discernible results for the customer.

I find pricing is kind of like tuning a guitar. You're going a little bit up - sharp - you're going a little bit down - flat and, eventually, you land right on the spot that is appropriate for you and appropriate for the client, because you don't want to price yourself out of work.

You have to know your worth, but you also have to know what the customer can afford. Find a middle ground where you’re happy to do the work for them and are able to afford to give them what they need.

It's good to keep challenging yourself -- what are some things in your business that keep you pushing yourself?

We were binging some Seinfeld the other day and caught the episode “The Masseuse.” In it, Jerry and George are on a double-date with their girlfriends. George being George, he behaves quite obnoxiously, and Jerry’s date, Jodi, ends up not liking him.

George becomes obsessed with Jodi’s disapproval, and his futile attempts to make her like him eventually drives away his own girlfriend, Karen, a woman who actually liked George for who he was (that is, until he started spending all his time trying to win over someone who didn’t like what he was all about in the first place).

As an entrepreneur, it’s very easy to get caught up in chasing potential clients who may seem lucrative and prestigious, but are just not right for your business and what you offer. Moreover, the pursuit of trying to please people at companies that aren’t right for you often means you lose focus on doing the sorts of things that got other folks—existing clients who you DO match well with—interested in the first place.

Don’t lose Karen in an attempt to win over Jodi.

Don’t try to sign clients who aren’t interested in how you do business.
