The Drop the Needle Podcast Music is the tie that binds and each of us has a soundtrack that accompanies our lives, if you just think about it. He also holds a Reiki Master certification.

Jim Alstott is a Health, Life, and Transformational Coach, certified through the Health Coach Institute. Jim's coaching journey began with his own physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation. Overcoming significant health issues and weighing nearly 400 pounds, Jim altered his lifestyle to lose about 1/4 of his body weight and has maintained that weight loss ever since. His efforts brought potentially dangerous blood levels into acceptable ranges and improved Jim's quality of life immeasurably. "Overcoming the guilt and shame associated with morbid obesity was driven holistically by improving my focus on body, mind, and spirit,” he notes. "There’s no magic bullet, just consistently seeking healthy attitudes and actions." Recognizing that others could benefit from his experience, Jim created unique and inspired programs focused on achieving balance in Mind, Body, and Spirit. "Coaching others to perform at a higher and more consistent level is my passion," he added. The programs are designed to help others feel successful and live their best and fullest lives through education and support. Clients are supported and empowered to seek balance and make lifestyle choices aligned with their goals. "It's not easy, but it's worth it. You are worth it." In addition to his work in coaching, Jim also previously founded and continues to manage a successful firm in the recruiting industry. Jim has served his clients in this role for 25 years and is one of the industry's top recruiters. A graduate of DePaul University, Jim received his degree in Vocal Performance and has performed in operas and musical theater. Jim is also an instructor of the CIJ Clarity Catalyst program, based on a Master’s program by Dr. Michael Ray at Stanford University. The program, called Creativity in Business, has been taught at Stanford University since 1979.

If you've ever helped someone and then felt the weight of their thank-you, this one's for you.

I asked Drew McManus of Satsang what he feels when someone tells him his music got them through the worst of it. Gratitude, he said, though it used to make him really uncomfortable.

Then he told me about his ex-wife's uncle Chris, a Buddhist, who cut the merch line on the last night of the tour, kissed him on the cheek, said one sentence, and walked away: "The healing is real, the adoration is not."

Drew's carried it as a mantra ever since. He didn't do the healing. The listener did. All he prays for is to be useful while he's here.

Whose song did the healing for you?

Sales school taught Connie Smock something she took everywhere: celebrate the no's.

Every one that didn't work out, the deal, the job, the relationship, puts you that much closer to your yes. That much closer to your person.

Which no turned out to be a gift?

Epilepsy is supposed to be rare. It isn't.

Mike Gomoll of Joey's Song puts it this way. Four people to a house, and every seventh house on your street, somebody has epilepsy. Put 52,000 people in Lambeau, despite the way the Packers started the season, and 2,000 of them will have it.

It's that common. And almost nobody talks about it like that.

Grocery store. Hospital. School. Every place leaves something on you.

Connie Smock says if you've never cleared your energy field, it's like walking around in a hundred coats. No wonder you feel heavy.

This is energy clearing in plain English.

What do you do to feel lighter?

We tell ourselves we're staying to be kind.

Connie Smock sees it differently. The other person could be with someone who actually looks forward to seeing them every day. And so could you.

Most people aren't meant to stay forever. They're here to teach us something.

Have you ever stayed too long?

Never ask a dad on a mission, "What can I do to help?" He will have an answer.

Mike Gomoll of Joey's Song got talking with Butch Vig backstage, and Butch made the fatal mistake of asking. Mike knew he wasn't getting Garbage, but Butch, Freedy Johnston, and Duke had the Know It All Boyfriends. They said yes, and the benefit went from a sports bar to a sold-out 600-seat club.

Who said yes for you before it made any sense?

We spend years hunting for our calling. Sometimes it's asleep down the hall.

I asked Drew McManus of Satsang when his son Malachi started showing him something about God he couldn't get anywhere else. His answer: before he even showed up.

He told me talking about his son was going to make him cry. Then he said it plainly. It's the most important thing he's ever been called to. Getting to be his dad.

Who showed you God before you had words for it?

For those of us of a certain age: remember your first Windows computer, and the blue screen of death?

Mike Gomoll of Joey's Song has used that picture to explain seizures for years, and he's never gotten a nasty email from a neurologist. The brain gets asked to do two things at once that don't fit together, so it shuts the whole thing down before anything gets hurt worse.

It's the clearest picture of a seizure I've heard.

I asked Cheryl the hard version of the question: if our souls choose our challenges before we're born, how do you say that to someone in the middle of a genuinely hard time without it sounding dismissive?

She didn't take the easy answer. She said some people won't see it, and that's allowed. If you're in that grief, in that sadness, it might not be something you can see right now, and that's okay.

"Give yourself grace in your journey, wherever you are."

Permission, not instruction. Ep. 73 with Cheryl Bradley.

If you've ever loved someone you couldn't quite reach, you know the ache in this one.

Mike Gomoll's son Joey was non-verbal. He couldn't say he was hungry. Then the music came on, he'd grab his dad's finger and start bopping, and I asked Mike what he saw in his face.

"The sun."

For the length of a song, Joey was one with everybody in the room.
