Today marks 30 years since the formation of the United Democratic Party (UDP). It has been a rough road, perhaps one of the most difficult journeys any political party in the history of The Gambia has endured.

Some were killed, some disappeared, some were jailed, some went into exile, and many faced countless challenges. Yet, through it all, the party remained focused and determined to bring about change.

For 30 years, it has maintained its principles and remained consistent in its commitment. It has never compromised its integrity for positions or money.

BLACKOUT IN THE CAPITAL: HAS PRESIDENT BARROW FAILED THE GAMBIAN PEOPLE?

Banjul is in darkness again.

And this is no longer just about a few hours without electricity. It is about a problem that has followed the Barrow administration for years and continues to disrupt the lives of ordinary Gambians.

In June, NAWEC introduced emergency measures to secure up to 70MW of additional capacity, while acknowledging that the country was facing serious electricity supply challenges.

Now, months later, we are still talking about load shedding. NAWEC says electricity demand has reached 140MW, while reduced imports and technical problems have further constrained supply.

But the bigger question is this:

After almost a decade in power, why are Gambians still being asked to accept darkness as normal?

President Adama Barrow inherited a weak electricity sector, yes. But government is not elected merely to explain inherited problems. Government is elected to solve them.

Gambians have heard the explanations. They have heard about regional supply problems, technical faults, fuel challenges, rising demand and other difficulties.

But citizens also have businesses to run, children to educate, food to preserve, hospitals to operate and homes to live in.

A country cannot seriously talk about economic transformation, industrialisation and investment when its capital city can be plunged into darkness without a reliable and sustainable solution.

The government may have legitimate explanations for the current crisis. But explanations cannot become a permanent substitute for results.

President Barrow must therefore answer a simple question:

After nearly ten years in office, when will Gambians finally have an electricity system they can depend on?

This is bigger than politics.

It is about leadership.

It is about accountability.

It is about whether government is delivering the basic services citizens have every right to expect.

The lights may be out in Banjul tonight, but Gambians are asking whether the problem is bigger than the blackout itself.

U.S. Court strikes down Visa Policy affecting Gambians

A U.S. federal judge has struck down a Trump administration policy that halted immigrant visa processing for people from 75 countries, including The Gambia

U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas ruled the January 2026 policy was โ€œpatently unlawful.โ€ She said Secretary of State Marco Rubio exceeded his authority and violated U.S. immigration law on nationality-based discrimination.

The court ordered the U.S. State Department to cancel previous visa denials and resume case-by-case reviews for affected applicants.

The ruling is a major development for Gambians and other nationals impacted by the suspension.
