This Saturday is Kentucky Derby Day!
05/05/2022

This Saturday is Kentucky Derby Day!

It’s Kentucky Derby time and there is nothing more exciting than watching 20 thoroughbred horses charging towards the finish line. The race takes place on the first Saturday in May at historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

I will give my race predictions later in this article but first here are ten Kentucky Derby facts:
1) The Derby is referred to as 'The Run for the Roses' because the winner is awarded a blanket sewn with over 400 roses post-race. This blanket weighs about 40 lbs.

2) Since 1930 (when the starting gate was first used) the most popular post position for the race winner is #5 with ten victories. The #10 post has nine wins followed by #1, #7, #8 with eight wins. The #19 and #20 posts have won only once and there has never been a winner out of post position #17 in the history of the Derby!

3) There have been 19 winners with a name starting with the letter “S” including Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Spectacular Bid and Swaps. Secretariat remains the fastest horse in Kentucky Derby history. His 1973 record time of 1:59.40 has never been broken.

4) The official drink of the Derby is a Mint Julip consisting primarily of bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint. Over 120,000 are said to be consumed on race day!

5) The record low temperature at the race (held on the first week of May every year) was 47 degrees in 1935 and 1957. The record high was 94 degrees in 1959.

6) All thoroughbred race horses have the same birthday—January first. No matter what day a horse was born on during the year, race horse age is marked from New Year's Day in order to make it easier to keep track of bloodlines. All Kentucky Derby horses are three years of age.

7) Only three fillies (female horses) have won the Derby: Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980, and Winning Colors in 1988.

8) The current purse for the Derby is $3 million, with the winner taking home $1.86 million, $600,000 for second place, $300,000 for third place, $150,000 for fourth place, and $90,000 for fifth.

9) Only one Triple Crown winner, Halma, has ever sired another Triple Crown winner, Omaha.

10) Jockey Bill Shoemaker continues to hold the title as the oldest Derby winner; he was 54 when he took home the 1986 title he has also ridden the most Kentucky Derby horses (26) in history.

There you have a few fun facts … I guess that makes you a Kentucky Derby expert! I will be at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday 5/7 trying to win a few bucks and watch the fastest two minutes in sports! The Derby is unlike any other race. You ask why??? First off there are 20 horses in the field … horses have been racing all year long accumulating points just to get into the race … it is the “jewel” of the horse race industry … payoffs are huge as it is the #1 most bet upon race in the world … and it is the first leg of the “Triple Crown” that also includes The Preakness and Belmont races.

Here are my early predictions for the race. I might refine these on race day (depending on any late workouts, weather conditions, etc) but here we go …

I like closers in the race. When the horses turn for home I want a horse who is sitting 5th or 6th on the outside of the pack. Churchill Downs has a long stretch and I feel that favors a “come from behind” type of horse. I like to bet exactas (picking the first two finishers) and trifectas (picking the first three finishers). You can bet $2, $1 or fifty cents bets.

That said I like #1 Mo Donegal and #10 Zandon to be part of my wagers. I will also use #3 Epicenter, #5 Smile Happy, #6 Messier and #16 Cyberknife in my bets. A six horse fifty cent trifecta box costs $60 and I think that is a good investment. Kentucky Derby’s trifectas pay huge because 20 horses create tons of possible combinations making the overall betting pool very large.

There are a few other horses I will use in smaller bets ( #8 Charge It, #12 Taiba and #15 White Abarrio) but I will key on the six I mentioned.

Let's hope for a good race and big payoffs!!! Good luck everybody!
