Onyx Publications Read our short stories for free or listen to our Story Discovery Podcast. If your submission gains consideration, we will contact you for more information.

Our mission is to provide an accessible path to writers and poets, for showcasing their work and broadening their reach, so that readers across the globe can discover new works. We are always open for submissions but there are specific deadlines for our quarterly editions of Etched Onyx magazine and the Story Discovery Podcast. All applications must come through our Submittable portal (you can acc

ess the link through our website www.onyxpublications.com). Submitted works must be previously unpublished fiction, nonfiction, flash fiction and poetry. We do not require that you put the story's life on hold while applying to us, therefore simultaneous submissions are fine, but please do let us know immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. You are welcome to include a cover letter, though, it is not required as it gives us more to read. We know waiting for responses can be a nail-biting experience (and may even include some cuticles) so we try to respond to all entries about one month out from the magazine publish date. We are open to all styles and types of writing as long as the story is engaging. While we are not opposed to experimental or speculative types of fiction, it has to be interesting and understandable. All works must be under 5,000 words.

AUTHOR NEWS! Summer Hammond won First Place in our 2024 Prose Contest, and we are happy to announce her essay "A Little Slice of the Moon" has been chosen for publication in The Best American Essays 2025 by Mariner Books.
This essay was first printed in New Letters Magazine as the recipient of the 2023 Conger Beasley Jr. Award in Nonfiction. "A Little Slice of the Moon" describes coming-of-age as a Jehovah's Witness, shunned due to sickness from formaldehyde poisoning...and how a forbidden first date tore apart my world, and gave me wings.

Spring/Summer 2025 Edition is open for submissions! We're looking for your best unpublished poems, flash fiction, or short stories (limit of 5k words) to include in Etched Onyx Magazine's Spring/Summer 2025 Edition. Work is published on-line and is also narrated, along with an author interview, on our Story Discovery Podcast.
Payments for accepted fiction/poetry work: $25 up to 2500 words
and $50 up to 5000 words.
The deadline is 7/1/25 with a $7.50 submission fee.

Congratulations to author, Deborah Wilbrink () whose work, Free T**s, we published in 2024. Since then, she has had stories accepted in Asymptote, Syncopation Journal, and Dead Mule - all upcoming. And she was awarded a Writers Residency at Can Serrat in Catalunya to work on her short story collection. Deborah wrote to us to say "You gave me the first recognition that someone liked my fiction." We are thrilled for you, Deborah!
