SOUP OF THE DAY:
EXCERPT From Byron & Valerie

When I finish, I wipe my tears and pull myself together; it’s just another day in my life. Everything just sucks. Always.
And of course, when I turn the key in the ignition, the car won’t start. I stare at the steering wheel. Now? Really? It’s just one stupid problem after the next. I hate this. I hate my life. I can’t get a break! I turn the ignition off and come out of the car to pop the hood. It’s smoking. I want to scream. I don’t know anything about cars.
“What’s the matter, Valerie?”
Kill me now! Please.
It’s Shaw, of course, dressed in a dark blue fitted suit. He closes the car door.
“It’s nothing,” I say and wipe at my eyes.
“Really? Because that certainly looks like something.”
“I don’t need your help.”
“Yes, you do.”
“No, I don’t!” I snap, “You don’t know everything, you know!”
“What the f**k are you talking about?” He runs a hand through his hair, irritated, “Valerie, clearly your car is damaged. May I take a look at it?”
“Do I have a choice?” I fold my arms over my chest.
“God, you’re so frustrating. I’m just trying to help.”
“I don’t need your help.”
“Yeah? Then who else is going to help? Do you even know anything about cars? Do you even have a mechanic?” I blush, “Yeah. That’s what I thought . . . move, please.”
I move. Ugh, he’s so freaking bossy.
Byron shrugs out of his jacket and places it inside his car before he rolls up the sleeves of his undershirt. When he bends over the hood, I blink at him. I forget all the time how attractive he is. It’s really nice to just stare at him.
“You should’ve just kept on going and ignored me like you’ve been doing for the past week,” I mumble.
He shoots a glare up at me but says nothing and continues to work.
