Skip the Can Keep the Catch Tuna Conserva: Why It Belongs on Your Boat

Canned tuna might be enough to strike fear into the hearts of sportfishermen everywhere, at least for me, it does. There hasn’t been a single time in my life that I’ve willingly eaten commercially canned tuna. Something about the metallic, mushy mystery meat packed in water (or worse, oil) has never sat right with me. But that got me wondering why I feel this way? And more importantly, what are we missing out on?

To be fair, we’re pretty spoiled. With a constant stream of fresh fish at our fingertips, why would we ever reach for something shelf-stable? But that line of thinking piqued my curiosity—how did we get here? How did people preserve tuna before factory canneries and grocery store aisles? And more importantly, how can we, as sportfishermen, take a better approach to tuna preservation without sacrificing quality?

The answer? Tuna conserva.

Founder and Former President of Viking Yacht Company Dies at Age 97

It is with great sorrow that we announce that William “Bill” J. Healey of Cape May and Mays Landing, N.J., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Aug. 14, 2025, at Shore Medical Center in Somers Point, N.J. He was 97.

Saltwater Profile Legendary Captain James Chuy Roberts

"Sunday, September 25, 1994, started like many other days for Captain James “Chuy” Roberts. He sat at the helm of the 40-foot Gamefisherman, the French Look, and chugged out of Funchal harbor on the Portuguese island of Madeira en route to the East Atlantic Ridge. “What could possibly happen today?” Roberts thought. Most captains, crews, and anglers would have wished to catch a grander blue marlin. Roberts had already accomplished this feat with the French Look and its mothership’s owner, Jean Paul Richard, not once, but many times in their first season in Madeira in 1994. August 24th kicked off an incredible month-long run."
