Bruno has finally had his liver biopsy, and the results are in. 😭
The biopsy revealed that Bruno’s liver is severely damaged. He has cirrhosis, which means much of his liver has become scarred, and abnormal nodules are forming in place of healthy tissue. This scarring is extensive and affects most of his liver.
The results also showed chronic inflammation, with immune cells and pigment-filled cells present. On top of this, there are signs of copper buildup in his liver cells.
Copper is a mineral dogs need in small amounts, but too much can be toxic. Some dogs inherit a genetic condition that prevents their liver from clearing copper properly, while others may absorb too much from their diet. Over time, this excess copper damages liver cells, worsens inflammation, and accelerates scarring.
In simple terms, Bruno’s liver has been under long-term stress, resulting in scarring, inflammation, and copper accumulation. This explains why he has been unwell and gives his vets critical information to guide his care moving forward.
Our rescue organization is dedicated to providing Bruno with the best possible care and comfort. His journey also highlights the importance of understanding conditions like copper buildup in dogs, so we can protect more lives in the future.
A huge thank you goes to Michele and Rod, Bruno’s foster carers, who go above and beyond for all their foster dogs—we are extremely grateful for their love and dedication.
