Eastern District Homicide Arrest

In reference to the homicide that occurred on November 16, 2021, in the 1700 block of North Chester Street, the Baltimore Police Department has identified and arrested a suspect for the murder of Ms. Evelyn Player.

62-year-old Manzie Smith Jr. was taken into custody on December 1, 2021, in the 4900 block of Crenshaw Avenue by the Warrant Apprehension Taskforce and charged with 1st-degree murder and several other charges.

Based on evidence collected on the scene and processed by our Crime Lab, we were able to identify Mr. Smith as the suspect in this case.

Manzie Smith Jr. remains in Central Booking, where he is being held without bail.

On November 16, 2021, at approximately 7:21 a.m., Eastern District patrol officers responded to a church in the 1700 block of North Chester Street, for a report of an unresponsive female.

Once at the location, officers located an adult female suffering from trauma to the body.

The victim was pronounced dead at the location.

Homicide detectives are asking anyone with information to contact them at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup.
