This Labor Day, Crime Trackers Massachusetts wants to remember what this day is truly about.

Labor Day is more than the unofficial end of summer, cookouts, sales, and a three-day weekend. At its heart, Labor Day recognizes the American worker — the men and women whose hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and service keep our communities moving forward.

Few represent that spirit more than those who serve and protect Massachusetts every day.

Our troopers with the Massachusetts State Police and police officers serving municipal departments across the Commonwealth put on the uniform knowing they may be called into someone’s worst moment. Our firefighters run toward emergencies. Our EMS professionals provide lifesaving care. Our dispatchers are often the first voice someone hears when they need help.

Our correctional officers perform an essential and often overlooked public safety mission, while probation officers work in our communities to provide supervision, accountability, and public safety.

They work nights, weekends, long shifts, and holidays — including today.

Labor Day honors work, service, sacrifice, and the people whose labor makes our communities stronger.

Today, we honor you.

Forty Worcester police officers are pre-eligible for retirement in 2026. That should be a wake-up call for the Worcester City Council.

The question is not simply how many officers may retire. The question is what the City Council is doing right now to prepare for the possibility of losing experienced officers while ensuring the Worcester Police Department has the staffing and resources necessary to protect the public and its own officers.

The City Council should be working with the City Manager and Worcester Police Department on a comprehensive staffing plan that looks beyond the next budget cycle. That means examining recruitment, academy classes, retention, competitive compensation, staffing levels, overtime demands and how quickly retiring officers can realistically be replaced.

It also means officer safety. When staffing becomes stretched, the officers who remain are the ones answering the calls, backing up fellow officers and patrolling Worcester's neighborhoods. They should not have to carry an increasingly heavy workload because city leaders failed to prepare for retirements everyone knew were coming.

Forty officers being pre-eligible for retirement does not mean all 40 will leave in 2026. But responsible leadership means preparing for what could happen instead of waiting until it happens.

The City Council has an opportunity to act now. Develop a master plan. Protect staffing. Invest in recruitment and retention. Protect the officers who remain on the streets. Most importantly, make sure Worcester residents continue receiving the level of public safety they expect and deserve.

The time to prepare for tomorrow's staffing challenges is today—not after the officers have already walked out the door.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and fellow officers of Worcester Police Officer Kurt Solomon, who dedicated 31 years of his life to serving the City of Worcester.

Officer Solomon’s death is a devastating loss for his family, the Worcester Police Department and the entire law enforcement community. Our thoughts are especially with his sons, Niklas and Brandon, his mother, Shirley, his brothers, Karl and Eric, and everyone who knew and loved him.

As law enforcement continues its search for Karen Solomon in connection with this ongoing investigation, we urge the public to remain vigilant. Authorities continue to believe she may be armed. Anyone who sees her should not approach her and should immediately contact law enforcement.

This remains an active investigation, and Crime Trackers Massachusetts will continue to respect the investigative process while providing verified information as it becomes available.

Thirty-one years of service represents an extraordinary commitment to protecting and serving a community. Officer Kurt Solomon’s dedication and service to Worcester will not be forgotten.

We stand with the Solomon family, the Worcester Police Department, NEPBA Local 911 and the entire first responder community during this incredibly difficult time.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts continues to follow the active search for Karen Solomon in connection with the death of off-duty Worcester Police Officer Kurt Solomon.

Worcester Police continue to search for Solomon, 58, and believe she may be armed. Authorities are asking the public not to approach her.

Police released video Wednesday appearing to show Solomon walking through the parking lot of Westside Animal Clinic on Mill Street shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday. She is seen with her hair in a ponytail and wearing flip-flops.

Throughout Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, Worcester Police cruisers remained at the animal clinic and part of the area was secured with police tape. On Wednesday, Massachusetts State Police and Massachusetts Environmental Police searched the nearby Coes Reservoir before clearing the area later in the afternoon.

Officer Kurt Solomon, a 31-year veteran of the Worcester Police Department, was found dead Tuesday at a Wildwood Avenue residence. Authorities have described the investigation as a domestic matter but have not publicly disclosed the circumstances surrounding his death or the relationship between Kurt and Karen Solomon.

At Crime Trackers Massachusetts, we value the partnerships we have built with local police departments and the Massachusetts State Police across the Commonwealth. These relationships are about more than supporting law enforcement—they are about bringing organizations together, strengthening connections between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and finding meaningful ways to give back.

We are proud to play a role in helping law enforcement agencies build and strengthen community partnerships, and even prouder when those partnerships directly benefit children and families across Massachusetts.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts welcomes the decision by the U.S. Department of Justice to close its investigation into the Worcester Police Department without further action and without sustaining the allegations contained in its 2024 report.

From the very beginning, Crime Trackers Massachusetts believed the Department of Justice's investigation into the Worcester Police Department was fundamentally flawed. We have consistently maintained that the investigation relied on flawed data, misinterpreted use-of-force incidents, and gave undue weight to anonymous complaints while failing to recognize the progress the department had already made under the leadership of City Manager Eric Batista and Police Chief Paul Saucier.

Long before the Department of Justice released its report, Worcester officials and the Worcester Police Department were already working to strengthen policies, improve training, build trust with residents, and promote fair, safe, and unbiased policing. Those efforts were underway because local leadership recognized that every police department should strive for continuous improvement—not because of federal intervention.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts believes the 2024 Department of Justice report failed to present a complete and balanced picture of the Worcester Police Department. In our view, it focused on a limited number of incidents while overlooking the professionalism, dedication, and daily service of the overwhelming majority of Worcester police officers who faithfully protect this community.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts has also been critical of the leadership decisions surrounding the investigation. We believe former U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins initiated an investigation that, in our opinion, was driven by a predetermined view of the Worcester Police Department rather than an objective assessment of the department's overall performance. We also believe Joshua S. Levy's decision to release the Department of Justice report in December 2024 reflected poor judgment and unnecessarily amplified conclusions that we believe did not accurately represent the department as a whole.

Those are our views, and we recognize others may disagree. However, today's decision by the Department of Justice to close the investigation without further action reinforces our belief that the Worcester Police Department should not have been defined by the allegations contained in the 2024 report.

The men and women of the Worcester Police Department have worked with Worcester residents to reduce crime, strengthen neighborhoods, and improve relationships throughout the city. Worcester is a safer city today than it was years ago, although there is still important work ahead to make every neighborhood safer for every resident.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts proudly stands with the officers, supervisors, civilian staff, and leadership of the Worcester Police Department. We thank them for their service, recognize their commitment to this community, and remain steadfast in our support for professional policing, meaningful accountability, and the continued partnership between law enforcement and the people of Worcester.

Today, Crime Trackers Massachusetts proudly recognizes and celebrates the retirement of Officer Angela Consiglio after an outstanding career dedicated to protecting the people of Worcester and serving the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with honor, professionalism, and integrity.

Throughout her career in law enforcement and corrections, Officer Consiglio built a reputation for leadership, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. Whether responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, mentoring fellow officers, or working with members of the community, she exemplified what it means to wear the badge with pride. Her dedication to justice, fairness, and service has made a lasting impact on the countless lives she touched throughout her career.

Officer Consiglio's commitment to continuing her education, earning both a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice, reflects her belief that learning, leadership, and professionalism never stop. She has been a role model to those who have served beside her and an inspiration to the next generation of law enforcement professionals.
