On this day, 24 years ago (9/11), Kenneth Chenault—just months into his role as CEO of American Express and only the third African American to ever lead a Fortune 500 company—found himself leading in the midst of one of our nation’s darkest days.

American Express’s headquarters sat in Three World Financial Center, directly across from the Twin Towers. That morning, Chenault was on a conference call with colleagues overlooking the World Trade Center when the first plane struck. Gasps. Screams. In the moments that followed, as the towers collapsed, Chenault realized he was facing the greatest test of his leadership.

Stranded away from New York on a routine business trip, he set up a command center from his hotel room. He ordered the evacuation of AmEx offices, ensured employees and their families were accounted for, and arranged new workspace. He instructed operators to reach every worker, while also serving the public: waiving late fees, raising credit limits, assisting distressed customers, and even chartering buses for stranded travelers.

Chenault later said, “In a crisis, you can’t manage by manual; you must manage by values and beliefs.”

On 9/11, American Express employed more than 3,500 people in Three World Financial Center and hundreds more across lower Manhattan. Eleven employees lost their lives. Chenault’s calm and compassionate leadership helped steady thousands of lives while honoring those who were lost.

Making History with Justice Cleo E. Powell

Breaking Barriers & Making History

We’re celebrating an extraordinary moment in judicial history! Justice Cleo E. Powell has just been unanimously elected Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia, making her the first African American woman ever to hold this esteemed position. She’ll officially take office on January 1, 2026, following the retirement of Chief Justice S. Bernard Goodwyn .

Justice Powell’s legacy is impressive and deeply inspiring:
• She first became the first Black woman justice on Virginia’s Supreme Court back in 2011, and was re-elected in 2023 .
• She’s served at every level of Virginia’s state judiciary—from General District Court to Circuit Court, Appeals Court, and now the Supreme Court—making her uniquely experienced .
• A proud double Hoo, Powell earned both her BA and JD from the University of Virginia, graduating undergrad with distinction in 1979 and law in 1982 .
• Her career spans private practice (labor & employment law, corporate counsel roles), public service (senior assistant attorney general), and prestigious leadership—now chairing the Judicial Performance Evaluation Committee and serving on the Judicial Conference’s Executive Committee .
• She’s deeply committed to education and mentorship, teaching at places like NYU’s Institute of Judicial Administration and the Appalachian School of Law .

Chief Justice Goodwyn had this to say about her: “Chief Justice‑elect Powell is a dedicated jurist who exemplifies integrity, civility, and professionalism, and I am confident that she will serve the Court as Chief Justice with the highest distinction.”

⸻

Why This Matters

This is more than a historic first—it’s a testament to decades of perseverance, service, and leadership. Justice Powell’s rise reminds us how significant representation can be and how it opens the door for others to follow. She not only reached new heights herself but helps pave the path for future trailblazers.
