At a public event in Khandwa, BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay claimed that the “true tribute” to Guru Tegh Bahadur is to stop religious conversions in the country and facilitate “Ghar Wapsi” for those who have converted. He urged that every Gurdwara should function as a “Ghar Wapsi Kendra.” Upadhyay alleged that safeguarding the nation requires two steps: ensuring that no one converts out of their religion and bringing back those who have done so. He further argued that since conversions historically occurred under rulers, “Ghar Wapsi” should also be carried out by those in power, stating that preventing religious conversion is the responsibility of both citizens and the government. He contrasted India’s situation with China, claiming that China does not face issues while India faces threats such as “love jihad,” “land jihad,” “ghuspaithiya (infiltration),” and “population explosion,” framing them as organised crimes, national-security threats, and even “acts of terrorism.” Upadhyay questioned the legal standing of minority institutions such as waqf boards, minority commissions, madrasas, and missionary schools, questioning why religion still dictates our law, arguing that if the nation was already partitioned, then when would such a minority commission act be over. Upadhyay then led a pledge in which attendees repeated anti-Muslim conspiracy narratives of “love jihad,” “land jihad,” and forced conversions, and called for “freedom from Rohingya and Bangladeshi infiltrators, demographic change, and bomb blast conspiracies.
