The holiday season is right around the corner, and we're here to help you with a gift guide focused on giving your loved one (or yourself) the best podcasting equipment out there!
Today's guide is all about microphone accessories! We recommend that all microphones have a pop filter to reduce plosive sounds, such as when using words with "p" and "b". It's something small, yet very noticeable to your audience.
Next is the RØDE PSA1 Pro Studio Arm, which allows for a full range of motion for the microphone. Whether you want to record your podcast standing up or sitting down, the arm allows you to position the microphone wherever needed.

What brought me here
I’m Steve. I’ve always been fascinated with sound. Recording sound. Manipulating sound. Recreating sound. As a kid I had an inherent love for radio. It would be just a matter of time that I would find myself behind the controls of KMJC, KSDO, KVSD and KOGO radio.
Twenty-plus years in radio with a focus on studio operations and audio production. Yep, manipulating sound. I remember playing golf many years ago with a radio buddy and telling him that “the production room is my playground. It’s like creating a piece of art; starting with a blank canvas and slowly adding to it.”
By the time I left the radio industry in 2002, I had earned an armload of awards that I cherish to date. One in particular: a Golden Mike award for Best Use of Feature Sound. Even though I tied for first place, the colleague that also won worked for KFI in Los Angeles—a station that I highly respected. “Wow, I tied with the big boys in L.A.,” I said.
Moving to Texas in 2004 opened up another opportunity when I started I Buy Time and became an advertising broker—a business that I continue to operate. Part of my business offers commercial audio production and I have produced hundreds of commercials, promos, and radio shows for clients all over the country. Fun fact: In 15 years of business, I’ve only met two clients face-to-face and one of them was earlier this week!
A couple of months ago a friend suggested that I look into the podcast industry, which is booming worldwide. It turns out that I was already in the industry but I just didn’t know it as I had been producing a client’s radio show for years. They decided that radio was no longer their medium and forged ahead into podcasting. I always looked at their show (whether for radio or Internet) as an extension of my radio career. After hours and hours of research and attending seminars and meetups with like-minded professionals, I received the inspiration that I needed.
Except I needed one more validation: When I presented the idea to my wife, her first response was, “Do it.” Done.
So, opening a podcast recording studio seemed like a natural progression for me. I’ve been an entrepreneur for over half of my life and audio production is not only in my wheelhouse, it is my wheelhouse. Teaming up with The Office Mansfield was a natural, too. They had the office space and have been awesome to work with.
Next comes the renovation—changing a 9’x10’ office into a soundproofed recording studio. I can’t wait to see the finished product: iMac recording, JBL studio monitors, Shure SM7B microphones, PreSonus studio mixer, funky wall art, LED mood lighting, it’s going to be fabulous!
And so, while others around me are retiring, the next chapter of my career begins.
