Farm Aid 1985: What Independent Artists Can Learn From Its Legacy

On September 22, 1985, the first Farm Aid concert brought artists together around one mission: supporting American family farmers.

What I love about this story isn’t just who performed.

It’s what happened after the concert.

They gave people a reason to care, a reason to gather, and something they could continue supporting long after the last song ended.

There’s a lesson in that for independent artists today.

Your show, release, livestream or event shouldn’t always be the ending.

Ask yourself:

What are people becoming part of when they connect with you?

A song may introduce them to you.

A mission, a feeling, a community or something they believe in can give them a reason to stay.

That’s how you start building more than an audience.

You start building belonging.

What do you want people to feel like they’re part of when they support your music?
