"With the six-year master contract in effect, the union says the Port of Virginia has “been the most resistant to complying with the new technology provisions” when compared to every other East and Gulf Coast port.

The union is seeking a permanent injunction that prohibits both the VPA and Edwards from interfering with the master contract’s grievance and dispute resolution procedures, in an effort to ultimately halt the rollout before any new negotiations. The ILA called for a jury trial.

The VPA did not comment on the matter.

While the ILA takes up issue with the implementation of cranes, the ports are seeking tax breaks on those that are produced domestically."

Union dockworkers accuse port officials of bypassing a required review process to implement the tech, thus violating the ILA's master contract.

"The rival Fairfax Workers Coalition (FWC), which didn’t make the ballot, filed a lawsuit against the county and Labor Relations Administrator Sarah Miller Espinosa in March questioning her acceptance of a petition SEIU filed on Dec. 31, 2024. The complaint alleges that SEIU might’ve counted some former members as supporters without their consent.

Though the legal battle remains unresolved, with the next hearing set for May 30, FWC Executive Director David Lyons argues that the union election results back up the coalition’s case that actual support for SEIU among county workers is limited."

"The wage deal is a two-year agreement that provides an average 7% wage increase for school system staff in the first year and an average 6.4% increase in the second year.

Other highlights of the agreement include:

Decompression of the certified wage scale to ensure employees are placed on steps commensurate with their years of experience

Increases in starting wages for teachers, with entry-level teachers with a bachelor’s degree receiving an over $5,000 pay bump and those with a master’s degree an additional $6,000

Targeted stipends for specific roles, including Individualized Education Plan case management, dually certified English language teachers and elementary strings teachers

Reclassification of certain certified positions to higher grades to ensure competitive pay

Increase in all supplements, which are used to compensate staff for clubs and sports"

The Prince William County School Board on May 7 approved the school division’s collective bargaining agreement with the local teacher’s union, bringing the addition of a wage agreement.
