Anyone else used to love fish n’ chips? I grew up Catholic and on Fridays during Lent, sometimes my mom would take us to get Rubio’s fish tacos, McDonald’s fish filets, or fish n’ chips from a local restaurant. I know the whole point of not eating meat on those days was to make a sacrifice, but TBH I loved fried fish so as a little kid it felt like a huge treat. 🤭
I’m not big on analytics (I think I’m missing my entire left brain actually), but I recently found out that my beer-battered banana blossom "fish" recipe gets quite a bit of traffic each month! So I revamped the recipe and the blog post a bit, and thought I’d give it another share.
Banana blossoms are an 🍌 edible flower 💐 that have a tender, layered texture — some people say it resembles that of fish. 🐟 Last year I battered and fried it to see what all the hype was about. I wouldn’t say it’s a spot-on substitute, but it’s still quite tasty as its own thing. With a side of vegan tartar sauce and a dash of malt vinegar, it does scratch the itch!
I’ll make this again soon so I can take updated photos for the blog. Also, I’m thinking it might be perfect to veganize a fried fish burrito I used to LOVE from a local Mexican joint in my hometown. It came with chipotle crema, shredded cabbage, and escabeche. Def going to give that a try and will update. ✌
