This absolutely gorgeous duck is a rarity in more ways than one, a jack of all trades! Bred to be a show-stopping exhibition bird that also puts copious amounts of eggs and meat on the table, this quiet, friendly, and useful bird deserves a place on any homestead! Did you know all domesticated duck varieties on The Livestock Conservancy’s Conservation Priority List trace their roots back to wild Mallard ducks originally domesticated in ancient Asia?

Through exploration, trade route, and the migration of people along with their farm animals, domestic duck varieties from Asia spread into the Middle East and Europe, reaching Europe by the 12th century. Meanwhile, North America’s Indigenous peoples had been using native wild duck varieties and Muscovy, a separate species of waterfowl first domesticated by Indigenous peoples in South America in the first century AD, long before European explorers arrived on this continent. They relied on these birds in cultural, spiritual and agricultural traditions.
