Celebrated the third week of September, Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week shines a light on animals that remain in foster care or shelters longer than they should.
Adult cats and dogs, and especially seniors, and other animals perceived to be less desirable (like those with special needs or ones unused to socializing) are the focus of this week. According to a 2020 study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science, older cats and less approachable cats, for example, took longer to adopt than their younger, more sociable counterparts.
But these animals can be a great fit! You might go in looking for a puppy, who has lots of growing and changing to do, but with an older dog, you'll know what their personality is from the start! That shy cat no one has adopted might just be so thrilled to be in a safe home that they turn into a cuddlebug! That wild, playful dog might be a perfect fit if you love to host family and needs the kids entertained!
These less popular furry friends deserve love too - next time you look to adopt, consider one of them!
