Cold weather can sneak up on you, especially when temperatures drop suddenly, and that is when health risks like frostbite and hypothermia rise quickly. It helps to know what to watch for.

Frostbite often starts with numbness or a tingling feeling in fingers, toes, ears, or the nose. Skin may look pale, white, or gray, and can feel firm or unusually cold. As it gets worse, the area can burn or sting as sensation returns.

Hypothermia happens when the body temperature drops too low. Early warning signs include uncontrollable shivering, feeling very tired, clumsiness, slurred speech, or trouble thinking clearly. These signs can progress even when it does not feel extremely cold.

Dress in layers, keep exposed skin covered, and limit time outside when temperatures drop quickly. If you notice symptoms, get to a warm place, warm the affected areas slowly, and give your body time to recover.

The holidays bring lights, candles, cooking, and cozy décor — and with them come real fire hazards. Remember to keep candles away from anything flammable, inspect holiday light cords, stay in the kitchen while cooking, and use heaters safely. Use surge protectors, and always unplug portable heaters before going to sleep. When heaters are running, keep them well away from curtains or anything that could catch fire.

If you haven’t made your holiday travel plans yet, keep these dates in mind.

December 20–21 offer smoother travel before the rush, and Christmas Eve or Christmas Day often come with lighter crowds and lower fares. Try to avoid December 22–23 and 26–27 when congestion and delays peak.

Every holiday season, millions of people take to the skies — and every year, the weather has other plans. If you’re flying home or heading out for winter travel, here are the four types of weather that cause the most flight delays and cancellations, and what they actually mean for your travel day.

How to Travel Smarter This Holiday Season

✅Book morning flights — they cancel the least.

✅Avoid tight connections in snow-prone cities.

✅Sign up for airline text alerts.

If snow is forecasted, screenshot your flight options early.

Cold Weather Safety Tips for the 757 🌬️

A strong cold front is moving through our area, make sure you’re prepared for winter temperatures and icy conditions.

Here’s how to stay safe and ready:
✅ Warm up your vehicle safely. Give your car several minutes to warm up before driving and clear all ice or frost from windows and mirrors for full visibility. Never warm up your car in an enclosed space such as a garage.

✅ Protect your home. Let faucets drip to prevent frozen pipes, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing, and know how to shut off your water supply in case of a burst pipe.

✅ Use heat sources carefully. Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable and plug them directly into a wall outlet. Never use an oven or stove to heat your home.

✅ Check on others. Make sure elderly neighbors, family members, and pets are safe and warm indoors.

✅ Stay informed. Follow local forecasts, alerts, and updates from trusted weather sources before heading out.

Preparation today helps prevent emergencies tomorrow.
