The Post and Courier is launching an initiative called the Journalism Preservation Society and will kick it off in September with a new speaker series, Charleston Porch Talks. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀
Significant funding is flowing into local media to help rebuild community coverage. That’s good news.

But here’s the problem: too often, local newspapers are left out.

Local newspapers remain the most trusted source of news. They already have the infrastructure, reach and deep community ties needed to deliver local journalism at scale. Overlooking them is not just an omission — it’s a barrier to real progress.

If we’re serious about strengthening local journalism, newspapers must be part of the solution.

We are proud to welcome The Ely Echo into membership
with America's Newspapers!

The Ely Echo is the weekly Minnesota newspaper known as the Voice of the North Country, which was founded in 1972 by Miles Aakhus. Ownership passed to Anne Wognum Swenson in 1977 after she had worked for the paper for three years. At that time the editor was Bob Cary, a Chicago, Illinois, writer.

The Echo has been fortunate in attracting excellent journalists, photographers, designers and artists during its existence. It prides itself in welcoming all sides of any issue. It has had a diverse group of employees over the years. Currently, ownership is shared by Publisher/General Manager Nick Wognum, Editor Tom Coombe and General Manager Cameron Weisert. Together they bring over 100 years of skill, service and training to Ely’s hometown newspaper. Their familiarity with Ely’s rich historical past gives the Echo insight into the changing times along the Canadian border.

The newspaper also publishes the North Country Saver, a total market coverage advertising product, and, in the summer, North Country Angler, a fishing publication.

Tim Franklin, the founding director of the Medill Local News Initiative and the school’s senior associate dean, will step down from those roles in September as he begins a phased transition to retirement.

Franklin will continue to serve as the John M. Mutz Chair in Local News and will be intimately involved in Local News Initiative projects. He’ll continue to oversee Medill’s State of Local News Project through next spring, as well as edit LNI’s website, make public speaking appearances and help with fundraising.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s 20-year-old joint operating agreement with the Las Vegas Sun never received required federal approval and is therefore unenforceable, a court ruled Monday.

The unanimous decision by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in favor of the Review-Journal reverses a District Court decision that the 2005 arrangement between the news organizations was lawful and binding, even though it was never signed by the U.S. attorney general, as required by the federal Newspaper Preservation Act.

With more than two decades of experience in the local newspaper industry — including leadership roles in editorial, audience and revenue strategy — Tony brings a comprehensive understanding of both the business and public policy challenges facing local newspapers today.

In this role, Tony will serve as the primary liaison for the State Advocacy Coalition, a coordinated alliance of press associations working together to protect public notice, defend First Amendment freedoms, and identify legislative solutions that strengthen the sustainability of local journalism.

“Tony brings an exceptional mix of industry experience and policy insight,” said Dean Ridings, CEO of America's Newspapers. “But more importantly, he understands what local newspapers mean to their communities. That combination is exactly what we need to move this work forward.”

The addition of this position marks another significant step in America’s Newspapers’ commitment to advocate for the model of local news that is delivering results—and fulfilling its public service mission—in communities across the country.
