Exactly opposite these 'Towers' is the 'Ashok-Vijay Complex'. There is little to talk about the side-walk/pavement enclosing this Complex: Like most of the public-welfare schemes in this city, it is there but difficult to walk on.
As I was approaching the Complex, I saw a number of hawkers scurrying towards it from Main Street, carrying their goods. They were obviously running away helter, skelter after seeing the dreaded 'van'!
"Poona Cantonment Board is dry of funds," says a well-informed man who is a resident of this area right from his birth. "The authorities have told the 'van men' to collect their 'salary' from the hawkers", who are operating illegally. This is a serious accusation.

'Aurora Towers' is an imposing building. Housing what was the well-known cinema theatre, 'West End' (which, currently, has shut it's operations and is reportedly on sale), it's southern section, where the Bo**ee Street nears it's end, is crowded by handcarts seling 'bhel', 'pani puris', cold drinks etc.
This is what is the main grouch of all the 'Towers' workers/visitors. "What I cannot understand is," said a 30-year-old worker in one of its offices, "why such type of blockades to this building goes unopposed by the authorities of Poona Cantonment Board (PCB)? Why is it that the recent crackdown on these hawkers was just a show?"
A good question.

Main Street Down the Drain

It did not take him long to come back. One day, on Feb. 10, he was fined Rs 50,000 and evicted from J J Garden area, on Dastur Meher Road. Soon he was back - selling and doing the same business as he always was: 'wada pav'!

Photograph (below) shows how brazen have these hawkers become: Now, together with the J J Garden 'pav-wala', there are many other hawkers, too, operating in this area.
