Stratton lived by a simple mantra inspired by Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

The son of environmentalists, he was most certainly an activist, but also open-minded and empathetic to viewpoints that didn’t align with his own.

Born in Eugene, OR, Stratton moved to Richmond, VT, at age 7. After high school, he returned to Oregon and settled in Bend. There, Stratton built a reputation in snowboarding by spending five years accessing mountains exclusively via bicycle.

First published in Issue 23.3, “Keeping Up with Stratton Matteson,” an exclusive interview conducted by Kael Martin (Kael Martin), is now live online. This feature is available for free and accompanied by “SUCCESSION: A Tribute To Stratton Matteson,” a video created by another close friend of Stratton’s, Tyndall Wells.

John currently has more than 100 boards and that’s after selling upwards of 300 over the past 10 years. His current collection contains the 1988 Blue B, original Craig Kelly Airs, Backwoods and more. See the goods and hear the stories behind them in the full episode, now playing on the site.
