"When we are together, we feel strong."

Led by Venezuelan immigrant Luisana Méndez, a growing Minnesota nonprofit is helping Latino families connect with nature –and each other– in the face of growing fear and uncertainty.

“When we are together, we feel strong,” Méndez says. “Sometimes I feel fear and I say, ‘Shall I continue with this? Am I putting people in a dangerous situation?’ I don’t know. But at the same time, I want people to take a break.”

What do current Minnesota senators Heather Gustafson, Zaynab Mohamed, & Erin Murphy, and former senator Patricia Torres Ray have to say about the intersection of public safety, economic equity, and political violence in this unique moment? We attended a Twin Cities Nonviolent panel at St. Catherine University to find out.

TODAY Thursday, October 2nd, 2025 5:30 – 6:30 PM

Community members, immigrant rights advocates, and local leaders will gather for a vigil in response to an ICE operation in St. Paul’s North End neighborhood. Witnesses reported agents in unmarked vehicles who refused to show identification and detained an entire roofing crew working at the time. The vigil will provide space for reflection and solidarity, while lifting up the concerns of immigrant workers and families who live with the fear of being separated from loved ones.

Hosted by the Immigrant Defense Network (IDN) and Comunidades Organizando el Poder y la Acción Latina (COPAL MN) with participation from community members, faith leaders, and elected officials, including Representative Athena Hollins.

"We have the power to collectively end this epidemic of violence — if we listen, learn, and act on what directly impacted communities tell us."

The high levels of violence against Black women, girls, and femmes in Minnesota are startling and sobering: "Black women in Minnesota are three times more likely than white women to be murdered. While only 7 percent of the state population is Black, 40 percent of domestic violence victims are Black women."

Dr. Brittany Lewis, Founder and CEO of Research In Action, shares about a powerful new initiative that aims to build a foundation of knowledge that can change the current reality: the Justice in Institutions for Black Women, Girls, and Femmes Survey, "the first statewide comprehensive survey to ask Black women, girls, and femmes about their experiences with and expectations of state agencies, emergency services, and community organizations that serve people impacted by violence. "

Black women, girls and femmes who are 14 years or older and live in Minnesota are invited to participate in this opportunity.

Our September/October issue is our very first double issue, with two complimentary focuses: collective health with a focus on caregiving, and the books, arts, and culture that allow us to take a deep breath and recharge in an often hectic world.

“We need to recognize that care is a public good.” — Ai-Jen Poo, family care activist
