FRESH DEL MONTE, FREEPORT WAREHOUSE LLC, AND PORT FREEPORT UNVEIL 80,000-SQUARE-FOOT COLD CHAIN FACILITY TO ENHANCE GULF COAST LOGISTICS

FREEPORT - Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc., (NYSE: FDP) one of the world’s leading vertically integrated producers, marketers, and distributors of high-quality fresh and fresh-cut fruit and vegetables, Freeport Warehouse LLC, a subsidiary of North American Stevedoring Holding Co., and Port Freeport celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new “Cross-Dock #1” facility. This state-of-the-art facility spans 80,000 square feet of chilled cross-dock warehouse and is strategically located near Port Freeport’s Velasco Container Terminal. The event marked a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the parties. Fresh Del Monte began weekly vessel calls to the port in June 2024.

“This facility stands as a testament to the strong partnership between Fresh Del Monte, North American Stevedoring Holding Co., and Port Freeport,” said Ravi Singhania, Chairman of the Port Freeport Commission. “We are proud to welcome this addition to our port community and its positive economic impact on the region.”

The facility is designed to streamline refrigerated cargo handling and improve supply chain efficiency. It includes 84 bay doors, seven temperature-controlled rooms to maintain an unbroken cold chain, expanded staging areas to ease truck congestion, and supports Fresh Del Monte’s import operations—distributing bananas, pineapples, and plantains across Texas and nearby markets.

“This facility represents a strategic extension of our logistics network in the region,” said Raul Saca, SVP, Global Logistics at Fresh Del Monte. “Our collaboration with Port Freeport and North American Stevedoring enables us to enhance the service standards our customers expect—strengthening cold chain integrity, improving speed to market, and building the scale needed for future growth. We value this partnership and the shared commitment to operational excellence.

With the opening of Cross-Dock #1, Fresh Del Monte gains increased operational flexibility and efficiency, enhancing its ability to serve customers throughout the southern United States. Since launching its weekly service to Port Freeport in mid-2024, the company has deployed modern, fuel-efficient vessels equipped to carry more than 600 refrigerated containers per voyage.

“We have a great deal of faith in Port Freeport and Fresh Del Monte and together we believe that this new atmosphere controlled cross dock facility will ensure the highest quality Green Fruit services along the Gulf Coast,” said North American Stevedoring Holding Co. Andrew Murphy, CEO.

Gulf Shrimp Season Closes May 15

AUSTIN- Commercial shrimp season for both Texas and federal waters in the Gulf of America will close 30 minutes after sunset May 15, reopening on a still-to-be determined date in July.

While July 15 is the statutory opening date for the gulf season, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Coastal Fisheries Division will sample shrimp populations this summer to determine the optimum opening date. The Texas shrimp fishery is closed annually to allow brown shrimp to reach a larger and more valuable size prior to harvest.

“The goal of this closure is twofold,” said Robin Riechers, TPWD’s Coastal Fisheries Division Director. “Allowing shrimp to migrate into gulf waters gives them time to mature and grow before commercial fishermen begin the summer season in July. This also helps ensure Texas’ shrimp stocks are sustainable not just for the season, but for upcoming seasons as well.”

The closing date of May 15 is based on samples collected by biologists using trawl and bag seine along with information gathered from the sh*****ng industry. Data include bag seine catch rates of brown shrimp, mean lengths of shrimp in April 2025, percent of samples containing shrimp and periods of maximum nocturnal ebb tidal flow.

The Texas closure applies to gulf waters from the coastline out to nine nautical miles. The National Marine Fisheries Service has announced that federal waters out to 200 nautical miles will also be closed to sh*****ng to conform to the Texas closure.

BABETTE FRASER HALE HEADLINES "EVENING WITH THE AUTHOR"

The 13th annual "Evening with the Author", presented by the Brazoria County Library System Foundation on April 29, featured Babette Fraser Hale, the wife of the late Houston newspaper columnist Leon Hale.

The author of "This Familiar Heart", which is described as "an improbable love story" on its cover, talked about her late husband and their relationship, which included an eight-year courtship before their marriage due to his being "skittish" after two other marriages and the 25-year age gap between them.

The event, catered by Filipp's Cafe, took place at the Brazoria County Fairgrounds and was a fundraiser for the library system's "Color our World" free summer reading program.

After her presentation, Ms. Hale autographed copies of "This Familiar Heart" as well as another book of hers, "A Wall of Bright Dead Feathers", which was a 2022 winner of the debut fiction award from the Texas Institute of Letters.

But it was the book detailing her and Leon Hale's 40 years together and her dealing with the grief of losing her popular "country boy" husband after his death that was the main draw of those lining up to get their copies personally signed.

There also was a silent auction, and The Bulletin donated two pairs of tickets to the upcoming Galveston Historic Home Tour as door prizes, with the winners being selected by County Judge Matt Sebesta.
