I don't know about you, but my daughter's terrible two's were mild-mannered. It was the treacherous three's stage where she acted like a child that did not come through my bloodline; relaxed temperament, obedient and easy. I didn't like her very much at this stage, even though she was an advance and articulate child. I did not subscribe to Dr. Spock's child-rearing philosophy. Most of my technique came by way of my mother's philosophy, which was, if they are not sick, are well fed, or present no feverish state, it was perfectly fine to let her cry because it would only make her lungs stronger.

I was no child expert, however, I quickly came to understand that as long as I addressed her treacherous behavior while in the tantrum act, she would perform to an audience. Soon after I'd ensure that the immediate surrounding space was safe and let her kick it out with no attention or eye contact while her little body moved as if she were inventing a new floor dance. When she would finish her theatrics, it was then that I'd get down to her level with eye contact and talk to her gently and then comfort her while explaining that mommy loved her and that she could not act like that. She'd return the hugs and pull herself together as my mother sat mumbling under her breath, 'I would have tapped her a*z, acting all crazy."

I dared not respond to my mother's words because I had been raised to never have a word war with my elders. It would be considered the ultimate disrespect. The funny thing is my mother tended to spoil my daughter while I was an old-fashioned, strict mother. Fortunately for my daughter, her treacherous threes were short-lived because this mama was not having it. It was as simple as that.
