MDOT ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY BRIDGE CLOSURE ON SR 43 IN RANKIN COUNTY

JACKSON, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) recently announced a temporary bridge closure on State Route 43 over the Ross Barnett Reservoir in Rankin County starting Monday, July 28.

The repair work will include repairs to a void underneath the bridge approach. This is to ensure the safety and lifespan of the bridge, which is a relief bridge for the Pearl River on State Route 43.

“Over the last several months, MDOT forces have been making temporary repairs to the bridge on Hwy 43 over the Ross Barnett Reservoir in an effort to keep it safe and open to the traveling public,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “However, a recent inspection of the bridge revealed a significant void under the bridge approach. We understand that closing this bridge, even temporarily, creates a real hardship for the families, businesses and commuters who rely on it every day. But everyone’s safety must come first. We’re committed to completing the work as quickly and efficiently as possible, and we thank the public for their patience and understanding during this time.”

Crews have been patching the failed bridge approach at least once a week in attempts to keep the road open. A full repair of the failed areas on the bridge is now necessary, forcing its closure. The closure is scheduled to last until Wednesday, October 1.

Five years ago, the road was closed for the replacement of two different bridges on State Route 43.

Motorists are advised to take an alternate route and to follow detour signs to State Route 25 and Interstate 55.
