And, if you enjoy this, please “like” and “share”. As well, if you would like to help keep a poor old fisherman in nightcrawlers and fireline, I am always looking for Sponsors.

This week, in general, fishing has been pretty good. A couple things happening. First, the mayflies are hatching. This is either a good thing, or a bad thing. The brookie chasers are pretty happy. Out there “matching the hatch” and getting some nice brookies, just about everywhere in the U.P. All of the usual trout streams are producing.

Plus, the inland lakes are heating up. With the warmer weather, the summer fishing is really starting to pick up. Lots of panfish. Plus, of course, lots of pike. And, the bass are in shallow. So, tossing things for them can be fun right now. Personally, I always loved to see that fish hit that top water plug. Just a rush. See that big splash and “fish on!”.

Then, the big lakes are producing. Pretty much. Lake trout are still biting like crazy in the Channel, by Detour. And, Keweenaw Bay is still really good. Kings have dropped off. For the moment. But, they are picking up lots of lakers.

They only calm spot I have is Bay De Noc. Lots of natural food and the fish are stuffed. Fishing has been pretty slow. However, they did report that they are starting to pick up some fish off of Fairport. So, they should be starting to heat up.

But, for this week, the fishing is good. Now, the play by play.

Drummond Island Johnson’s Sport Shop (906-493-6300.) Your one spot stop for everything outdoors on the Island.

Pickford: Wilderness Treasure Shop. (906-647-4002) They have bait, tackle, and some really pretty treasures to make that fish camp look pretty. They usually have good info on Munuscong Lake, the Cedarville and Hessell area, and the St. Mary’s River.

Talked to Tom. As always, really good info about what is biting in that area. This week, he said, “They are picking up quite a few walleye, off Raber. And, Munuscong Bay is full of pike. They’ve been getting quite a few little ones. But, they’ve also been getting a lot that are 40” or bigger.

Then, over in Cedarville, they’ve been doing good on the bass. They are up shallow right now. Plus, I have heard reports that they are picking up a few herring. But, not sure on that one. Just some rumors I have heard. If they are catching them, they are being quiet about it. But, the mayflies are hatching. So, now would be the time that the herring are biting.

Then, over in Detour, they are still doing really good for Lake Trout, out in the Channel. And, they are picking up a few Atlantics.”

K&V Grocery Moran. Gas, munchies, bait, etc. Also, the home of the happiest minnows in all of Moran. (906-643-9665) A good place to find info on Brevoort Lake.

This week, they said, “Been pretty busy hear. Haven’t had time to really talk to anyone. But, there has been a lot of people buying bait and going fishing. So, I am pretty sure that they are catching something. But, just not sure what.”

However, Brevoort Lake tends to produce lots of panfish. A good amount of walleye, plus pike and other things. So, just gear up for whatever you want to catch, and give it a go.

Deer Park (Muskallonge Lake) Northwest of Newberry, on Lake Superior shore. Bait, cabins, boat rentals, propane, store, etc. (906-658-3341.)

Talked to Ashley. Way fun. She said, “I don’t know anything.” Then, I asked, “You seeing a lot of fishermen?” She replied, “Yes.” I asked, “Are they happy?” She replied, “Yes.” Then, she added, “I know they’ve been getting a lot of pike here in Muskalonge Lake. And, they have been getting way more walleye then they have in a few years. And, I am still seeing a lot of ORVs. And, we have stickers here. So, if you need a sticker, we have them. And, we have plenty of bait.” She she really did know a lot.

Duke’s Sport Shop in Newberry. (906-291-2110) Talked to them. Bait, tackle, coffee pot, good conversations.

Talked to Chuck. He has been out of the loop for a bit. Had no idea what was biting. But, last week, they noted that the fishing on the Tahquamenon River has been picking up. Catching a few walleyes. Plus, above the dam, this time of year is always good for pike. And, with the mayfly hatch, top water fishing should be really good. A lot of bugs on top of the water. So, either use something that looks like a bug. Or, use something that looks like a small fish that got wounded trying to eat bugs.

Curtis: Mick’s Bait Shop. (906-586-6040) Bait, tackle, info. This week, Mick stated, “Everything is biting. The weather has warmed up and the fish are active. Just about everything that is out there is biting. And, I will leave it at that.”

Indian Lake, Manistique Area. Linda’s Bread Box. (906-644-2284) Gas, bait, tackle, munchies. This week, chatted up Mary. She said, “Been getting a few fishermen. And, they seem pretty happy. They’ve been getting quite a few walleye and perch, over here on Indian Lake.”

Bay View Bait and Tackle, Escanaba (906-786-1488) Bait, tackle, motel. Talked to the wonderful lady there. Always just a nice conversation. She knows a lot about the local area.

This week, she said, “Fishings been pretty slow. A lot of natural food on the Bay. We have alewives and the mayflies are hatching. So, the fish are pretty full. And, not a lot of people fishing the big lake. They are getting a few fish. But, pretty slow. The fish are just not biting that good right now. To much natural food out there for them. So, a lot of people have been going to the inland lakes. And, I hear that they’ve been doing pretty good on the crappies and blue gills. But, pretty slow on the Bay. But, I did hear that they are now starting to pick up some fish, down in Fairport. Off shore. I guess that they are starting to pick up some salmon.”

L’Anse: Indian Country Sports: (906-524-6518) Bait, tackle, and a whole lot of good info. Talked to Ashley. Always just fun. She always knows what is biting in the area.

This week, Ashley noted, “They’ve still been doing pretty good, right here in Keweenaw Bay. The Kings are gone right now. But, they have been picking up quite a few coho. They’ve been getting them in the top of the water column. Like, 40 or 45’ or up. This is out in like 100 or 200’ of water.

Then, they are doing really good on Lakers. Most of the guys have been fishing for them right on the bottom. And, they’ve been getting some really nice ones. But, the guys trolling for salmon have also been getting them up higher in the water. So, they are pretty much everywhere.

And, the inland lakes are still pretty good. Basically kind of a mixed bag. Just about everything. And, Prickett Dam still seems to be the hot spot. They’ve been doing really good over there.

Then, the river fishing is still really good. They’ve been doing good on the brookeis. Using small spinners. Plus, crawlers and red worms. But, the bugs are really bad right now. So, be sure and bring lots of bug spray.”

Lake Gogebic Bear’s Nine Pines Resort Cabins, etc. (906-842-3361)

In general, the fish are biting. Pretty much just about everything is biting. More or less. Again, one of the hot spots continues to be Keweenaw Bay. The Bay itself is producing a lot of nice catches. They are still doing good on the salmon. But, the Kings have dropped off a bit. However, they are still picking up some Coho. Also, they are doing good for both Lake Trout and Whitefish.

Plus, if you are interested in a bit of a challenge, they have a fishing tourney up there this weekend. The Keweenaw Showdown takes place on the 12th.

Then, over on the other end of the U.P. Munuscong is still producing a lot of fish. Pretty much everything in there is biting. Good reports of walleye, pike, bass, and perch. Plus, suckers, carp, and just about everything else that swims in that water.

Then, fishing on the Tahquamenon has picked up. We are starting to come more into the summer months, which is when the river fishing is best. And, from what I have heard, they are starting to pick up some walleye. Have not heard anything about muskies, yet. But, those should start hitting pretty soon. And, if you are out for really big muskies, this is the pace to catch them.

Then, the DNR reported that the trout fishing is pretty good. There are various hatches happening. And, I have also heard good things about that. And, if you want to try to “channel” Hemmingway, then give the Big Two Heart a go. (He actually fished the Fox a lot more. Check in Seney if you want to actually follow in his tracks.

But, for this week, fishing is pretty good. Just about everywhere. So, here is the play by play:

Drummond Island Johnson’s Sport Shop (906-493-6300.) Your one spot stop for everything outdoors on the Island.

Talked to Rick. This week, he said, “Fishings been up and down a bit. They’ve still been picking up a fed walleyes. Some are catching them, some are not. Plus, they’re getting a few bass and pike. But, not many perch yet.

Then, they are also still doing really good on the Lake Trout, out in the Channel and out by the Lighthouse. And, along with the Lakers, they are also picking up a few salmon.

Then, the ORV Trails are open and in good shape. They have dried up some. But, there are still some wet spots out there, if they want to play in the mud.”

Pickford: Wilderness Treasure Shop. (906-647-4002) They have bait, tackle, and some really pretty treasures to make that fish camp look pretty. They usually have good info on Munuscong Lake, the Cedarville and Hessell area, and the St. Mary’s River.

Talked to Tom, who said, “Fishing is still really good in Munuscong. They’re still getting just about everything. Lots of walleye and perch. Plus, pike, and bass, and suckers, and carp and just about everything else.

Then, down in Cedarville, they are still doing good on the pike and bass. Plus, picking up a few panfish. However, the fish have moved out a bit. So, fishing will be better from a boat, than from onshore. But, there are still a few places where you can fish from shore and catch fish. It’s just that you will do better from a boat.”

K&V Grocery Moran. Gas, munchies, bait, etc. Also, the home of the happiest minnows in all of Moran. (906-643-9665) A good place to find info on Brevoort Lake.

Talked to Denise, who said, “Fishing has been pretty good over on Brevoort Lake. Mostly, I’ve been hearing about perch. They seem to be doing really good on them. And, we have been selling a lot of bait. Lots of leeches, crawlers, and minnows.”

Deer Park (Muskallonge Lake) Northwest of Newberry, on Lake Superior shore. Bait, cabins, boat rentals, propane, store, etc. (906-658-3341.)

No report this week. Phones were messed up. Heh, it’s the U.P. We’re like that at times.

But, the DNR did report in their Fishing Report that Brooke Trout fishing has really picked up. They also named the Two Heart as one of the places that is seeing some good action. Namely, with the weather, there has been quite a few fly hatches. And, this usually means good fishing for the fly people out there. And, Brooke Trout fishers in general. Because, while Brooke Trout may love flies, they will also usually not pass up a good old worm on a hook. But, just be sure that the stream you want to fish is open to live bait. Because some trout streams are artificial bait only.

Duke’s Sport Shop in Newberry. (906-291-2110) Bait, tackle, coffee pot, good conversations.

Talked to Dusty. He said, “Fishing is picking up. They’re starting to pick up some walleyes, on the Tahquamenon. Plus, everything else is starting to bite. Seems like the fish are starting to get really active. And, seems like everybody is catching fish.”

Curtis: Mick’s Bait Shop. (906-586-6040) Bait, tackle, info. They reported, “They’ve been doing pretty good on the crappies, on South Lake. Plus, a few blue gills. Then, the walleyes have been biting pretty good on both lakes. And, of course, there are a lot of bass out there. We just had our Curtis Clash Bass and Walleye Tournament this past weekend, and they did pretty good on both of them.”

Indian Lake, Manistique Area. Linda’s Bread Box. (906-644-2284) Gas, bait, tackle, munchies.

Talked to Jessica, always just fun to chat with. She said, “All my answers are the same as last week. I’ve been selling a lot of bait. And, the fishermen seem really happy. I’m not sure exactly what they are catching. But, they seem to be doing pretty good.

And, I am selling lots of leeches, both jumbo and regular, and crawlers, and worms. Plus, I have wax worms, and I just got in some herring strips. So, I have lots of bait.”

Bay View Bait and Tackle, Escanaba (906-786-1488) Bait, tackle, motel. Talked to the wonderful lady there. Always just a nice conversation. She knows a lot about the local area.

This week, she said, “Things have pretty much slowed down in the Bay. Not much happening. They are getting a few walleye. And a few pike and perch. But, not very good fishing. One reason may be that we have seen a lot of alewives in the Bay. So, the fish may be feeding on them, and not biting. Also, the heat may not be helping. A lot of people don’t want to go out there when it gets warm, like this.

But, I have been hearing good things about the inland lakes. They are picking up blue gills and crappies. Nobody will say exactly where. But, it seems like the gills are off their beds now, and are really starting to bite.

Also, I have heard about a few people heading offshore, off Fairport, to fish for salmon. But, it is still early for that. Haven’t heard about anybody really catching anything.”

L’Anse: Indian Country Sports: (906-524-6518) Bait, tackle, and a whole lot of good info. Talked to Ashley. Always just fun. She always knows what is biting in the area.

This week, she said, “Fishing is still really good around here. They’ve been doing OK trolling in Keweenaw Bay. But, the salmon have slowed down a bit. Especially the Kings. They are still picking up a few Coho. But, the Kings seem to have moved on.

But, they are still going strong with the Lake Trout. I’ve talked to guys that have been jigging, over by the Huron Islands, and they have been doing really well. Saw some really nice fish.

Then, over on Huron Bay, they’ve been doing good on the Walleye, especially around Pine Point. But, right now, if you’re after Walleye, then Portage Lake is the spot. I guess they are really doing good on them right now.

Plus, right here in Keweenaw Bay, they are catching Whitefish. They’re jigging in 80-90 feet of water, using Swedish Pimples, tipped with a piece of sucker. And, they’re bringing in some nice fish.

Plus, the inland lakes are pretty hot right now. Lots of panfish. Especially Prickett Dam. They have been catching just about everything there.”

And, if you enjoy this, please “like” and “share”. As well, if you would like to help keep a poor old fisherman in nightcrawlers and fireline, I am always looking for Sponsors.

This week: Fishing is still pretty good. A lot of good fishing out there. Getting good reports on walleye and such. Munuscong seems to be the happening place right now. As well as the north shore of Drummond Island.

Then, for Lake Trout, the Detour Channel is still the hot spot. Last week, I was getting reports of 30 or more fish per boat per trip. Those are just crazy numbers. That is basically as fast as you can catch them.

Then, Keweenaw Bay is still good. Got a good report this week that they are doing pretty good on Coho and Kings. Up shallow. And, some Lakers, deeper.

Then, hearing that the ORVs are out and about. Plenty of them out. Trails are good and open. But, also heard that the DNR is out and they are issuing tickets for no Trail Stickers.

They are not letting people off because of “Covid” anymore. That bird has flown the coop. There are lots of places to buy a sticker. And, Trail Stickers fund the program. So, it is important to buy a sticker. And, personally, if you can afford to pay $20,000 or more for an ORV, then you can afford to pay a few extra bucks for that Sticker.

And, personally, still been fishing the night shift. On my home town stream, been picking up really good numbers of bull heads. Tasty little fish. And, the occasional carp. On carp: Not so bad smoked. Pretty tasty if you do it right. Also, just me… Catching that cute little 10 inch brookie is fun. Hooking up with a 30 pound carp, now, that’s a fight. Just sayin’.

Anyway, from the reports, just about everything is still biting just about everywhere. Fishing is good.

Now, for the Reports:

Drummond Island Johnson’s Sport Shop (906-493-6300.) Your one spot stop for everything outdoors on the Island.
Did not answer his phone. But, last week, Rick reported, “The walleye are biting. Been getting really good reports from Scott’s Bay. Lot of walleye in the 24-26” range. One 28” inch fish. But, most are 18-20”. Good eaters. They’ve been picking them up trolling with crawler harnesses. Plus, they’ve been picking up a few pike and bass. So, fishing has been pretty good.

Also, the Trails are open and we have been seeing quite a few jeeps. And, most of the people we have seen seem pretty happy with the trails.”

Pickford: Wilderness Treasure Shop. (906-647-4002) They have bait, tackle, and some really pretty treasures to make that fish camp look pretty. They usually have good info on Munuscong Lake, the Cedarville and Hessell area, and the St. Mary’s River.

Talked to Tom, who said, “The walleyes are still biting on Munuscong. Guys are still doing good on them. Also, pike, bass, perch, just about everything in the Bay is biting. People been doing really good. Having lots of fun.

Then, down in Cedarville, they are still picking up pike and panfish. But, they are still getting a lot of Lakers over in Detour. Right in the channel.

Then, he added, “On Drummond, they are still doing good on walleyes. Just in case you didn’t get in touch with Rick.”

K&V Grocery Moran. Gas, munchies, bait, etc. Also, the home of the happiest minnows in all of Moran. (906-643-9665) A good place to find info on Brevoort Lake.

Kathy said, “The fish are biting. Just about everything is biting right now. They are catching a lot of fish. It is a good time to go fishing. And, we have lots of bait. Worms, crawlers, leeches, minnows, chubs.”

Deer Park (Muskallonge Lake) Northwest of Newberry, on Lake Superior shore. Bait, cabins, boat rentals, propane, store, etc. (906-658-3341.)

Talked to Christy. Always a fun chat. She said, “The fish are biting. They are picking up pike, and bass, and panfish. The fishing is really good.” This was for Muskalonge Lake and the other inland lakes in that area.

Then, she added, “And, I have not heard much about the Two Heart. I think that may be kind of done for the season.”

And, she said, “And, I have been seeing lots of side by sides. They are out in force. Also, the DNR is out. And, they have been checking for stickers. So, you better have your Trail sticker on your ORV. Or, they will give you a ticket.

Same thing with Fishing Licenses. The DNR CO told me that they have been seeing a lot of people fishing without a license. And, if they check you, you will get a ticket.

They said people are using the excuse that you can’t buy one, (Because of Covid). But, he also asked if I sell them here. And, I do. So, just saying, you better have your Trail Sticker, and if you are fishing, your Fishing License.”

And, personally, I have been involved in the Trail system as a Professional for over 27 years now. And, the way the Trail system gets funded is through the Trail Stickers. So, you need to buy your sticker. Also, this is me personally, if you can afford to pay $20,000 or more for an ORV, then you can afford to pay a few bucks for a sticker.

Same with the Fishing License. The money from Licenses goes to fund the Programs. Personally, I am Native. I do not have to actually buy a State License. But, I do. Because I believe in the Program. Enuff said.

Duke’s Sport Shop in Newberry. (906-291-2110) Talked to them. Bait, tackle, coffee pot, good conversations. This week, they reported, “Fishing has picked up on the Tahquamenon River. The River is low right now and the fish are in the holes. To, they are targeting those areas. And, they are catching walleyes, and perch. And, the occasional pike and muskie.”

Curtis: Mick’s Bait Shop. (906-586-6040) Bait, tackle, info. Did not answer phone. But, last week reported good catches of just about everything. Especially pan fish, on South Manistique Lake.

However, Duke’s reported that fishing on South Lake has slowed down just a bit. Said they were out on South Lake and did not do that great. However, I was out on my personal spot and also did not catch much. Might have been just a front going through.

Plus, Curtis has their Curtis Clash Walleye and Bass Tournament this weekend. Prizes for the top catches. Also, a nice dinner and lots of fun. Call Mick’s for more details.

Indian Lake, Manistique Area. Linda’s Bread Box. (906-644-2284) Gas, bait, tackle, munchies. Talked to Jessica. Very pleasant girl. She said, “Not much to report. I’ve been off for a few days and a bit out of the loop. But, we’ve been selling quite a few crawlers and jumbo leeches. And, I’ve been seeing quite a few fishermen out on the lake. And, they seem pretty happy.”

Bay View Bait and Tackle, Escanaba (906-786-1488) Bait, tackle, motel. Talked to the wonderful lady there. Always just a nice conversation. She knows a lot about the local area.

She said, “Fishing has slowed down a bit. They are still catching walleyes. But, they have slowed down just a bit. Also, we had our Tournament last weekend, and did pretty good. We had 19 entries. Which is OK. And, our next Tournament is in August.”

She added, “And, I have not heard much about perch. Just everything seems to have slowed down a bit. Same with bass. They’ve been getting a few. But, down a bit from last week.”

L’Anse: Indian Country Sports: (906-524-6518) Bait, tackle, and a whole lot of good info. Talked to Ashley. Always just fun. She always knows what is biting in the area.

This week, she said, “They are doing pretty good trolling in Keweenaw Bay. They’ve been picking up quite a few Coho and some big Kings. From what I’ve been hearing, the fish are all over the place. But, they’ve been doing best in water 60’ and up. Also, orange and green seem to be the best colors.”

She went on, “Then, some of them are picking up some Lake Trout, fishing the deeper waters. They’re starting to do better on them.”

Ashley added, “Plus, the river fishing has been pretty good. They are still getting quite a few brookies and rainbows. The Huron has been pretty good.”

She finished, “And, the inland lakes are good. Especially Prickett Dam. They are really doing good over there. And, I have been hearing good reports from Otter Lake, and a few of the other inland lakes. Lots of panfish, pike, bass, and whatever else is in them. Fishing has been good.”

U.P. Trax N Trails Fishing and Fun Report May 20th 2021
By Stephen King

If you have anything to report, or would like to contribute, please contact me, Stephen King, at [email protected]

Or, you can visit my site: https://uptraxntrails.com

And, if you enjoy this, please “like” and “share”. As well, if you would like to help keep a poor old fisherman in nightcrawlers and fireline, I am always looking for Sponsors.

Overall, this has been a pretty busy week. First, the big thing was the opening of walleye and pike season. That was what everybody was talking about. And, as usual, there was a mixed bag of results. Some good. Some not so good. The good was on Bay De Noc and on Munuscong. Both places were producing lots of limits of “eyes”. And, Keweenaw Bay was again producing a lot of fish. Salmon and Trout. The not so good was about everywhere else.

Then, the trout fishing is still pretty good. Personally, this was always my favorite time of the year to fish trout. The weather has finally warmed up so that your fingers don’t go numb and you’re not dodging snow flakes. Also, the pretty green stuff still hasn’t gone completely bonkers and you can still get to the streams without a w**d whacker. And, the spring floods have gone down. So, the fish are hungry. And, if you toss the right thing in front of them, they will usually take the bait.

Then, getting good reports of suckers. They are where they usually are this time of year. And, for those of you who still turn up your nose at them, they really are tasty. Grind them up, add in a few onions, some saltine crackers, a little oatmeal, an egg or two, make into patties, coat in pancake flour and fry. Pretty tasty.

Also, the morels are popping. And, just as a bit of a quirk, I had Anthony Williams, the 5 Time Morel Picking World Champion in my store a couple days ago. Always fun to visit with him.

And, he had a bit of advice: The trees. Look for the right kind of trees. Old apple tree groves are the best. For the black morels, the early ones, look for aspen. For the white morels, the later ones, look for ash.

Then, in the early season, look on the south sides of ridges. Then, later, look on the north side. And, as you walk, go up and down the ridges. Rather than from side to side.

And, in other news, the ORV Trails are open. With the warmer weather, I am expecting a lot more people out on the Trails.

Now, for this week’s report:

Drummond Island Johnson’s Sport Shop (906-493-6300.) Your one spot stop for everything outdoors on the Island. Did not answer their phone. But, the ORV Trails are open and in good shape.

He reported, “We had a great opener over here on Munuscong. Lot’s of people. Lots of people limiting out. Just a lot of fish out there. That was both Saturday and Sunday. Then, the bite slowed down for a couple days. But, now they’re hitting again. And, they are getting them on just about anything. Most are using crawler harness or crank baits and slow trolling them. The fish are also really shallow. In 5-6’ of water. Also, they are in the dirty water. Look for the dirty water and you will find the fish.

Then, over in the Cedarville area, they are picking up quite a few perch and blue gills. Plus a few pike and other things. And, they are doing pretty good from shore. The usual spots. The bridge and the various docks.”

K&V Grocery Moran. Gas, munchies, bait, etc. Also, the home of the happiest minnows in all of Moran. Talked to Denise. She reported, “Not sure how they’ve been doing. But, a lot of people out fishing. Last week, I ran out of leeches. But, we’re restocking and we should have minnows, crawlers, and leeches for this weekend.”

And, a bit more on that. I was at the Straits Area Sportmen’s Association meeting this past week. And, most of the guys there fished Brevoort Lake. They were not a bunch of happy campers. Bascially, they saw a lot of fish on their sonar. But, the fish were not biting. One guy got two. One undersize and one legal. And, that was the highlight reel. So, not that good of an opener there. But, the fish are there. Just got to talk them into biting.

Deer Park (Muskallonge Lake) Northwest of Newberry, on Lake Superior shore. Bait, cabins, store, etc. (906-658-3341.) Did not answer the phone. (Also-Follow Me Outfitters, the gas station, bait shop, ORV and canoe rental place, is closed until Memorial Day Weekend. Just FYI.)

Duke’s Sport Shop in Newberry. (906-291-2110) Talked to them. They said, “They’ve been getting a few fish on the River (Tahquamenon). A few small pike and a few walleye. And, haven’t heard anything about the Two Heart. Not sure what’s happening up there.”

Curtis: Mick’s Bait Shop. (906-586-6040) Talked to Dave. Not sure what happened my old buddy, Mick this week. But, Dave said, “Had a pretty decent opener. Some caught fish. Some did not. But, the ones that did seemed to catch most of them in the hour just before dark. And, they were catching most of them on minnows. With leeches taking a close second.

Then, right now, they are still picking up a few perch and gills, mostly on the south lake. And, the suckers are still in, and they’ve been doing pretty good on them. But, for the most part, everybody was all excited about the opener And, I have heard of a few pike being caught. Nothing huge. But, quite a few of them.

And, I also want to mention our Tournament, the Curtis Clash, this is for bass and walleye, with a top prize of $500 for bass and walleye. And, I want to mention that this is a fun family tournament. No Pros or Semi-Pros. It will be on June 5th and 6th. And, will include a Fish Fry on June 6th. You can call here for more information.

Bay View Bait and Tackle, Escanaba (906-786-1488) Bait, tackle, motel. Talked to a very nice lady who was more than happy to tell me everything she had heard. She told me, “We had an excellent Opener. Lots of people. Lots of people getting limits. They did the best on the north part of the Bay. Up around the Whitefish River. Then, they did good on the Escanaba River as well.

And, from what I hear, they’re doing the best either early in the morning, or in the hour just before dark.

Also, they are still picking up some perch. And, what a lot of the guys are doing is fishing walleyes first thing in the morning, and then perch during the day, and then going back to walleye later in the day.”

Autrain Grocery Store and Motel (906-892-8142) Gas, a few groceries, munchies. Decent home made pasties. Usually good fishing at the mouth of the Autrain River. Talked to Rita. She said, “I’ve seen a few people out there fishing. But, I have no idea how they have been doing. But, if this counts, I caught a sun fish, on a little lake. And, that was fun.”

To add just a bit more: The DNR Fishing Report for last week stated, “The ramp has been in for a week now. Coho are in shallow water and were hitting on jigs and stick baits with a slower presentation. A few brown trout have also been caught. Chinook salmon were starting to be caught on spoons in the early morning. Steelhead are spawning in the rivers and were hitting on spawn bags. This week, the report was about the same.

So, somebody stop in at the Grocery and tell Rita about this, please.

L’Anse: Indian Country Sports: (906-524-6518) Bait, tackle, and a whole lot of good info.

This week, Ashley reported, “Fishing has been great up hear. They have been doing great, right hear in Keweenaw Bay. They’ve been getting limits of salmon, both Kings and Coho. Plus, a few Browns. Those have been in the top of the water column. 40’ feet and shallower.

But, the deeper waters have been good for Lake Trout. They’ve been doing good jigging for them. They have been using spoons and bits of suckers.

And, I haven’t heard of anyone doing anything here in Keweenaw Bay for Walleye. But, over in Huron Bay, they’ve been doing pretty good.

Then, the stream fishermen are still doing pretty good on trout. Both rainbows and brookies. But, the bugs are really bad. But, if you can deal with the bugs, the fishing is pretty good. Hearing good reports from the Huron and other area rivers.”

They also mentioned the 2021 Keweenaw Bay Showdown, a Fishing Tournament they have coming up on June 12th. I have also posted their poster on both my page and website. So, be sure to check that out.

Copper Harbor Fuel Stop. (906-289-3483) They used to be good for information about Trails, Fishing, etc. New owner. Asked me not to call him anymore. He does not fish and does not know anything about fishing and does not want to be bothered. Just FYI.

Lake Gogebic Bear’s Nine Pines Resort Cabins, etc. (906-842-3361) The Lake Gogebic Opener had great weather but fishing was rough. With 60’s on one day and 80’s today (Monday), it has been almost to nice for the walleyes to bite. Anglers are picking up fish on a variety of methods. The standard jig and minnow drifting or casting a wide range of depths from 20-25ft during the day with better reports coming from the 6-10ft during the evening and after dark. Lots of 11” fish with some nicer ones in the 15-18” range. Many people are also trying crawlers and leeches. Or, just trolling. But, the small mouth are very active. They have been biting very well. But, you must remember that season is not open for them, yet.”
