Episode 11 — Dark Money — looks at the large, independent expenditures trying to influence this year's mayoral election. Two groups are spending several hundred thousand dollars each to attack the candidate they oppose and, hopefully, improve the chances of the candidate they support. Because it's an independent expenditure, they don't have to divulge who their donors are, though we talk about who is likely behind each effort. We also discuss if these efforts can be effective and, if so, who stands to benefit the most.

I'm joined by Eric Sondermann, a long-time Colorado political strategist and now Gazette columnist, and Mark Waller, former El Paso County Commissioner and State Representative.

Today's bonus episode is a short conversation with Richard Skorman, past President of the Colorado Springs City Council, former mayoral candidate, longtime business owner and one of the founders of the Trails, Open Space and Parks program. Richard shares his views on some of the key issues facing our community and his hope for how the new Mayor leads the city.

Episode 11, out this Thursday, will take a look at the dark money influencing this year's race and whether or not it will have an impact on who makes the runoff and ultimately gets elected Mayor.

Episode 9 — Show Me the Money — is available now.

Money drives politics and that is certainly the case in this year's mayoral election. As of Feb. 15 the candidates have collectively raised more than $1.5 million, with five of the candidates accounting for 99% of that total.

My guest — former state legislator and county commissioner Mark Waller — take a look at how much each candidate has raised and where it's coming from, to give you an idea of who might have influence at City Hall if their candidate gets elected.
