BREAKING🚨🏳️🌈 A trans music teacher in her first job out of college was targeted by Libs of TikTok, Moms for Liberty and a GOP lawmaker. Her Wake County school board just refused to act against her.
The teacher is a young trans woman in her first job out of college, hired to teach music at Middle Creek Elementary in Apex, North Carolina.
In late July, Republican state Rep. Erin Paré posted on Facebook about "the hiring of a transgender biological male, who dresses as a woman, music teacher," and floated a bill requiring "gender-appropriate professional attire for public school employees." The ACLU of North Carolina called the idea unconstitutional.
Libs of TikTok took it national, telling millions of followers the school had a new "nonbinary" teacher and "students reportedly have to call him Ms." The post included her photo and urged people to contact the principal. By noon the next day it had 295,000 views on X. A conservative blogger published her name.
Tami Fitzgerald of the North Carolina Values Coalition said the teacher's presence "will surely cause mass exodus from the school."
Then the community showed up. Elizabeth Stacks told the board her children were thrilled to meet their new teacher at Meet the Teacher Night. "I've seen the worst of Wake County in seeing discourse online and seeing just absolutely horrible things said about a person that my kids already know and love," she said. Kelli Wilhelm, president of the Raleigh-Apex NAACP, told the board: "We will not allow you to be bullied out of the classroom."
At the August 18 meeting, Moms for Liberty Wake County chair Becky Lew-Hobbs demanded the district "provide reasonable alternatives" for objecting families. Parents who asked to pull their kids out of music class were told no.
Board member Lynn Edmonds said the hire broke no rules and the district cannot discriminate in hiring. Board member Chris Heagarty said gender-based clothing rules amount to "impermissible s*x stereotyping under the Constitution."
The board adjourned with no action against the school, the teacher, or the principal who hired her.
