Today (8 January) marks the birthday of British actress, singer and musician Cynthia Erivo.

Erivo opened up about what coming out meant to her in a June 2025 in a ‘Letter to My Younger Self’ published by Big Issue.

“The moment I came out, I was like, ’Ah, that’s what it’s like when it’s quiet. That’s what it’s like when everything makes sense, not hiding any more’”, she wrote.

Ricky Martin is speaking out about a troubling reality - gay men are being forced back into the closet. The Puerto Rican superstar, who plays a closeted character in Apple TV's "Palm Royale", says the fear his 1960s character experiences isn't just a period piece anymore.

"Here in America, we're having to hide again. And it's really sad," Martin told USA TODAY. The singer, who famously came out in 2010 despite warnings it would destroy his career, isn't mincing words about what he's seeing. "It's crazy that we're talking about this story of the '60s, but it's so relevant."

The numbers back him up. In 2025, several US states proposed legislation to repeal same-sex marriage, while the FBI's 2024 hate crime report found more than 20% of incidents were motivated by sexual orientation or gender identity. Earlier this year, Orlando even removed the rainbow crosswalk honoring the 49 Pulse nightclub shooting victims.

Martin says playing Robert, a closeted caretaker in Palm Beach high society, gave him a way to address these struggles head-on. "We're dealing with the same fears and the uncertainty and we're dealing with the rejection today," he explained.
