The HBCU community has come together, deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two beloved Spring 2025 graduates, Jayden Flemming and Ronnie Burns II. Both young men were sources of light, joy, and inspiration to those who knew them.

Our hearts go out to their families, friends, classmates, and all who were touched by their presence. In this time of sorrow, we stand united in grief and remembrance honoring their lives and the love they shared with the world. May their memories bring us strength, and may we find comfort in one another during this difficult time.

A GoFundMe created in their honor has already raised nearly $100,000, a reflection of the love and support surrounding their families.

HBCUs aren’t just institutions they’re cultural powerhouses that shape leaders, amplify voices, and inspire movements. The influence of Historically Black Colleges and Universities continues to reach far beyond college campuses.

That impact was felt at Amos P. Godby High School, a public school in Tallahassee, Florida, where rising senior Omega Forbes (Class of 2026) launched a student government campaign modeled after HBCU student elections and won SGA President!

Inspired by the bold, creative spirit of HBCU student leaders, Omega filled the campus with colorful chalk messages, campaign flyers that popped with personality, and even secured major endorsements from and . His campaign turned his high school into a platform for vision, strategy, and culture and proved that HBCUs are shaping the next generation long before college begins.
