Ministering to the dying has its heartaches and tears but there are days of humor and laughter as well.

Today I was visiting a patient in a facility and I walked into his room while he was having some lunch. After the customary introductions and learning a little about him and his family, I asked if I could offer a prayer.

He looked up, smiled, and politely declined the prayer. He hesitated for a moment and then said, "But if you could get me some mayonnaise for my sandwich I would really be happy."

"Pentecost---what's that all about?" was the question directed to me by a college freshman who came to our hospice unit to say good-bye to her grandmother who was sharing with me her desire to have God call her to her heavenly home on Pentecost Sunday --- today. After an extended discussion of the scriptural history and meaning of Pentecost, I shared with the granddaughter one phrase from Paul's letter to the Corinthians: "To each individual, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit." The granddaughter then said, "I guess I haven't looked for that Spirit in me yet, but maybe if I did, I could help a lot of people like my grandmother did in her life." On Pentecost Sunday, maybe it's a good time to ask ourselves how others "benefit" from the Spirit that lies within us because, with that Spirit, we have the power to make the world a better place. Happy Pentecost Sunday!
