Almost a year ago, I got the chance to play my first set on club style gear. It was nerve wracking in a way I haven't experienced very many times. I'd heard tons of horror stories about malfunctioning or barely functioning equipment. I was terrified at the prospect of one of my biggest opportunities being squandered due to not knowing the gear or it not working. So I prepared. I over-prepared. And then I prepared some more.
I came with 4 sets of backup USBs and my own controller, just in case they let me plug in.
For the first 15 minutes, I couldn't get the headphones to work. I was flying blind. Luckily, I knew my tunes, so I was able to trust my gut fairly well. I had a hard time figuring out where everything was. So I dialed back my performance plans. I had to really focus on song selection (tragic timing for the headphones to not work 😂) I can't remember what other difficulties I had, but I'm pretty certain there was other stuff that went wrong during the set as well.
I really love the fact that this particular moment got captured between and I because it shows the whole vibe of the set, I think. A modest, but engaged crowd. Dancing like no one is watching. And absolutely bangin' tunes.
I'm beyond excited to be invited back to Symmetry Music & Arts Festival this year. Work on the set is officially beginning TODAY even though I've been working on it tentatively for the last 6 months or so. I can't wait to throw down with y'all.
It's gonna be a blast 🚀 🚀 🚀
Also, if you're still here- DOUBLE THANKS for reading to the end. Let me know an artist or song you'd love to hear at Symmetry. Can be any genre or time period after like 1968. I'll do my best to flip it into something good for ya.
Much love, allentastic 💙
